His-and-hers advert ban as TV pulls plug on gender stereotypes

Adverts which encourage gender stereotypes like women cleaning up after their family, or men failing to do housework, face being banned under strict new watchdog rules.

Following a year-long inquiry the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has developed a set of tougher standards on adverts which portray "potentially harmful" gender stereotypes.

From next year the new rules, which will now be finalised by the Committee of Advertising Practice, will be used to ban inappropriate adverts.

The ASA found there was evidence to support stronger rules on the basis that harmful stereotypes "can restrict the choices, aspirations and opportunities of children, young people and adults".

Controversial adverts by Gap, KFC and Protein World, all of which received a number of complaints last year, are examples of those which could be affected by the crackdown.

The new standards will not ban all stereotypes, such as women cleaning or men doing DIY jobs.

An advertisement does not stop anyone's choices, aspirations or opportunities. This leftist, social-justice-warrior censorship and banning of ads is ridiculous. They'll try to censor and ban other stuff after this.

The Advertising Standards Authority is an Orwellian organization.

Yeh.. Being something of a left-wing libertarian, I'm in two minds about this decision. On the one hand, the sexism in some adverts used to make me cringe, but on the other hand this seems like a bit of an legislative overreach.

However, then the following facts occurred to me that since the early 00s, neither I nor my family really see adverts any more because of various technological change that have occurred. The only examples of sexist ads I can think of are from the 80s because ads just aren't a thing any more. The only place I see them are at the cinema... I don't see them on TV because we download everything. I don't see them on the internet because of adblock (and my own natural filtering that causes me not to notice them even if they are there)...

Honestly, I can't say I've noticed an ad in 15-20 years.. Still, I suppose someone must still be watching them.. probably just old people.

Quite pleased personally, being a full time single Dad the stereotypical Dads are useless when looking after the kids bit was quite condescending. My daughter used to comment on it quite a lot when adverts were all about Mums doing this and Mums doing that.

To be fair I am totally useless at looking after my two kids Richa..no Stev... no thats not it.. i'll try the daughter... err ummm no hang on it'll come to me in a min.

I live in Italy (and these days I look after The Boy more than the wife does) and everything about looking after kids is aimed at women the voiceovers even address them 'Mamme, quando...' I want to swear at the TV every single time. Of course if I ever raise the issue it's 'ah, don't like it when its you do you?'

And yeah, it's hilarious tv-advert dads always hold up the baby and the nappy falls off..

Of course as the eldest of six kids and had plenty of practise by the time my boy came along, I was actually far better at a lot of stuff than my wife was.

Yeah, its an outrage. First they take my slaves, then they tell me my gay neighbors can live together in plain view and now I cant even enjoy my casual sexism on TV? This is absurd, what is next?! I swear, there will be a day soon that I cant even kick a puppy in the face without some social justice warrior crying about it. [mad]

The Advertising Standards Authority is an Orwellian organization.

If Orwell were around today, I suspect he'd have more to say about the intrusive way modern technology is used to target advertising at individuals, rather than worrying about what the ASA is up to. Do a Google search for something innocuous, and spend the next two months looking at adverts for it. Big Brother isn't just watching you any more...

True.. I often think it's fairly useless at actually selling stuff though. I always think of it as a "Try and sell me something I've already bought" engine. I went to Vegas a couple of month ago and I'll still getting ads on facebook telling me about shows I could see there... Don't think I've ever seen a relevant one but then mostly I don't see them at all.

Well said.

Who can forget the harrowing chapter were Winston Smith's new deoderant commercials were deemed too sexist and he was politely asked if he could make some that were less offensive?

That was surely the message of Orwell's 1984; big brother was too nice to people and tried to not offend them.

I'm a house hubby personally. My GF (actually now wife since Monday!) ascended quite high up the corporate ladder, and makes enough by herself to keep us all comfy. So I stay at home with the spawn and look after the house, she goes and does works.

She says it's fine and she's happier with me looking after little Isaac than getting childcare, but sometimes the guilt hits me and I feel like a kept love-bum.

Full time single dad. Now I understand how you got that knighthood.

You should look after your children. At least find out what their names are. One day you might need a kidney :)

Back on topic. Gender stereotyping is very bad in adverts generally. It works for the advertisers because the stereotypes are close to reality in a lot of cases, and that is because the current generation grew up with those self same stereotypes. If we want the next generation to be a bit less stereotypical then this bit of legislation is probably a good thing. In my humble opinion of course.

Don't feel guilty. I have been in the position of having to look after the kids on my own. Thankfully not for more than a couple of months at the longest stretch. It's no easy ride.

Thanks man. It's really hard work and exhausting at times to look after this little lunatic (although I love every minute). But the very gender stereotyping mentioned in this thread has drilled into me the notion that it should be me out there earning while my wifey wife stays at home and looks after the aforementioned lunatic.

I do feel it, but I ignore it most of the time.

To put things into context I've been like this for nearly 10 years and they are now 'orrible, grumpy, lazy, smelly teenagers and I (Don't ask) seem to have aquired another Teenager along the way due to her having family problems.

I am as you can guess pretty much verging on rabid insanity 99.999% of the time.

Wouldn't change a single thing though.

Back on topic, I'm happy that they are doing something about this. More and more nowadays the generic stereotypes are disappearing and for me that's not a bad thing at all.

TV is not used to watch "TV" in our house, I pretty much never watch TV and Ms. Lysan only watch soap operas on it.

I dont remember the last time I watched an advert on TV. The old TV I would mute them, and now our screen is just that a screen it doesn't have a tuner so in effect I dont even own a TV.

There is always someone trying to ban something somewhere, but maybe it's past time to do away with some of the more stereotypical views we still have, in a few years it will be 2020...

***checking those billboards about the stations for sexism now****

is that a MAN droid I see?
not really, im not in the game

Women who look after households are super heroes (men too). A stable family equals a stable society. Look around you. Especially if you live in Detroit or Chicago. The break down of the family has coincided with rising crime rates and destitution. I've over simplified it of course but there is truth to it.

It's really funny that social conservatives get upset when stereotypes aren't being reinforced. It's almost as if they are a little insecure with their gender orientation, or something.
