I first tried VR at the Trocadero Centre in London about 25 years ago. It was so disappointing and I can't believe it has taken so long to reach this point, I truly believed it would be in all homes buy now.

Isn't it a bit far fetched to include simple stereoscopic image viewers?

IMHO head tracking (and adapting the view according to head movement) is a minimum requirement for VR.
