Hitchhiking the Galaxy

I appreciate this will have been raised before but it may now be possible to implement.

We need an electronic Thumb.

In anticipation of the impending announcement of the launch Odyssey for my PS5....

I would like to humbly request the Dev team look again into the possibility of providing an Electronic Thumb, (or personal beacon) that would allow on foot commanders to request to hitch a ride on a starship. I would imagine this would work using a variation of the existing wing beacon mechanics with perhaps flags on the galaxy and system maps visible to commanders within range.

There is already a galactic travel guide in game. If there were also some way to obtain a towel that might be truly splendid!

I reckon it'd be great to see what one can get up to with no ship. Seems feasible to hitchhike everywhere. I'd like a little, simple message board of some sort (even if it's just preset multichoice stylee) for FCarriers too, so that visitors can have some way of reading and leaving messages for the owner or other CMDRs.
Good suggestion, OP.

There are Discord Servers setup for this sort of thing, it should be noted. It's a horrid 3rd party kludge addon solution, but there are networks if you take the time to build/thread them. Fleet Carrier Owners Club, Travellers Association, that sort of thing.

The discord groups are great especially for carrier operations and suchlike but what I am really excited for is [organic] "on foot" hitchhiking. and maybe the occasional opportunity to enjoy a pan galactic gargle blaster in the bar!

Would be nice to have an ability to get on the one of the NPC ships landing and taking off and just fly to the destination port of that ship.

There could be a table of departures added to the terminal with a number of landing pad, destination and remaining time. And maybe large dynamic flight schedule board in front of elevators.

Multicrew exploration?

For me at least, the telepresence thing doesn't cut it. I would love to see a commander, lost somewhere on a planet, on foot, be able to thumb a lift in game for a passing commander to come and pick him up.

It seems an easy way to add a massive new component to the game (without really doing a huge amount of development).

... Obviously an "I am here beacon" could potentially attract some less savory types to misuse it for nefarious purpose, but that's the galaxy for you!

Always remember the golden rule; DON'T PANIC!

Well you could have the beacon reveal nothing until someone "accepts" the call. Then it tells them your system (not who you are) and tells you how far away that person is. Then when you see that get below 1 ly (they're in system), you can switch it off until trust is established via system chat.

Fun idea, like getting a place on a trans-ocean freighter. Only some ships will offer it. Issue is that Apex is always safer and costs approximately zero though.

FCOC is nice, like some massive train station with hundreds of platforms.

That's true. But I think in the combination with flight schedule board it could contribute more to immersion than using Apex.

There could be opportunities for:
  • traveling longer distances than Apex can provide (as having no choice of destination, sort of trade off)
  • taking a part of some random adventure (e.g. pirate attack with subsequent landing on nearest planet and on-foot fight there)
  • discovering unique trade routes (some temporary generated ones with significant advantages in commodity prices)
And in principle allowing to interact on-foot with NPC ships could be used for new type of missions - hack and steal ship - when one gets an insight that certain ship is supposed to land in the settlement full of palladium, steal it and fly to specific anarchy settlement, where careful route planning is needed and refueling could become a real issue.

Nice ideas, yes. I'd welcome it regardless, but FDev would need to feel uptake would be enough for it to be worth the dev investment. Extra gameplay loops like you suggest give it much more pull so that it would seem more worth the investment. Still, so easy to get blown up randomly, and that would have to be dealth with.

I like your enthusiasm!

This dear sir... you can keep your to yourself. I will not in this game or any other game be enjoying a gargle blaster pan galactic or not especially in the back of a random space bar.
Why thank you ☺️

One might hope you would prefer the Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster to the common gargle blaster although each to his/her/their/it's own! 😂
