General / Off-Topic Hmm, maybe the E: D community isn't so bad after all? ;)

Just watched this video from WatchMojo.......and I can honestly say that it's left me feeling that the E: D community isn't nearly as bad as any of those on this list ;). Seriously, what is *wrong* with some people?

Because there isn't a complete focus on adversarial PvP, which I'm actually grateful for and part of the reason why I bought ED.

Competition brings the worst out of people, but at the same time is a necessary drive for improvement of skill.

Completely agree with this.

Also to add, the anonymity afforded by the internet also brings out the worst in people.

Edit: Combat logging in FIFA lmao.

Hyper-competitive jackholes taking everything too seriously, rampant cheating, griefing and ganking, racism, misogyny and homophobia. Basically every multiplayer game ever made. The human race everybody!

Luckily Elite largely provides us with the means to avoid all that nonsense.

ETA:

The souls series and ME3 don't belong on there, the first is most definitely no better nor worse (and a lot of helpful people exist, you just need to know where to look, there's a reason for JOLLY CO-OPERATION after all), and the second was mostly a specific incident which the developers wrought upon themselves.

Jolly Co-operation is certainly a thing but I have complained bitterly on many occasions about people being scared off from even trying the series due to the elitist these are the hardest games of all time, only the best can play them attitude of certain parts of the community. Dark Souls aint that hard!

And those are usually the guys shanking noobs whilst screaming "git gud" at them.

Hmmm now what does that remind me of?

League of Legends at the top though, what a non surprise.

I've personally found Elites forum and reddit to be borderline pathetic in its attitude to pvp and pve but the community is far from being toxic.

For my part I've never found minecraft to be toxic then again my experience extends to an occasional look at the reddit page as I don't play the game with others.

One thing that surprised me a lot recently is WoW. Payed it for a month just to meet with old friends there, and during the time i was running around the world, doing few quests and learning how things have changed i did not meet a single "i will kill you just because i can" person. It is amusing to see people from opposing factions (which are hostile by design, cannot even chat with each other) helping each other to do things and apologising for accidental aoe hits and such... very different expirience to what i've seen in ED while flying in LHS 3447 in a sidewinder....
So no, not all online/multiplayer games are as bad as it is shown in the video...

Minecraft was, for me personally, the most surprising one on this list ;).

I don't think it's competition. Chess matches are very competitive but you don't see that kind of behaviour. There's a certain culture that believes being competitive means being a butthole but the two are not intrinsic.

I actually find the Elite Dangerous community to be wonderfully helpful. You cant judge a community based on a few bad apples. Also, I find that our community tends to draw more mature players compared to something like Call of Medal Duty Honor counterstrike.... And whilst not judging all young people, the hyper competitive ones tend to be borderline psychotic!

I have occasionally played Rust, if you want a toxic community, go there.. They are a hilarious bunch.

Bah, I skimmed the video and think they really missed the mark for examples of toxicity.

I think the video's problem is a focus on american videos and streams for their examples. Almost every single game I load on Dota has abuse that could get you into trouble with the law here in the UK. Russians in particular, seemingly only communicate with expletives in Dota. I rarely play for this reason - there's nothing more sobering than listening to some man-child rage when you're trying to relax and play a game. Particularly when they're wishing every possible disease and death upon you and your family. I honestly don't know why anyone would want to play with people like that.

But I played Dota for a long while and watched it become more and more toxic over the years. Back when I first started playing Dota I could have maybe 20 games without a rager (which was around 10 hours of play). I can't remember the last game I had without one now. Literally every game I am in. Every single one - someone rages. That doesn't always lead to someone getting abused but most of the time if they're raging they're also looking for someone to take it out on.

Dota is a great game and has some excellent eSports attached but I consider it a blight on the gaming community. I think if you could target every dota player and remove their capacity to connect to the web indefinitely, the whole internet would be better off for it.

I never really played LoL but I've heard it is the same. Probably worse as there are more people playing.

I think Elite has a friendly community. If you consider how different everyone's background is - both in life and in gaming - the atmosphere is relaxed; particularly if you contrast it to games like Dota.

Anyone using the word toxic to describe behaviour is part of The Problem imo. Also who makes a video whose sole purpose is to call out entire groups of people? What sort of jackhole gets off on that level of negativity?

The video sucks. Mass Effect MP is one of the best MP games ever. And the people who play it are either beautiful blue alien women or proud and strong lizards.

The ED community is awesome. It's funny even though different groups disagree with each other on certain points (sometimes passionately) I actually have a lot of respect for all. Over the last year I've had wonderful advice and help from:

Explorers
PVPers
PVEers
Miners and traders

All groups actually love this game and are passionate about what they do in it. We might tread on each others toes sometimes, but basically I think this community is pretty awesome. (bad apples not withstanding)

The reason it was mentioned wasn't the multiplayer though. It was about all the nerdrage over ME3's ending.

Yes it sucked and deserved to be criticized, and Marauder Shields was amusing, but the reaction was pretty over the top. Sending death threats to writers families? Come on!
