Hmm, Problems with the type 8?

I just watched the latest video from Galnet News Digest and they're reporting an overlooked problem with the new Type 8.

Apparently it's too low to the ground to launch an SRV out of. You can't really dismiss the ship because eventually you'll have to recall it to board and when it lands you maybe in an even worse situation...

Not a lot of testing went into this new ships design...

I hope a quick fix can be found, I wanted to pick one up on Wednesday but I needed to be able to use an SRV with it for what I had in mind. Probably grab one anyway and hope for the best lol..

IIRC, there is a mechanic where the ship will hover and collect you if it can't find anywhere to land nearby. But... that would only work if it couldn't find anywhere to land.

Maybe FD can make a tweak with the Type 8 to always do this.... but then, how do you get out in the first place? Find a depression and land perfectly over it to get out?

Perhaps the only solution is to give it longer legs.

Ya, making it sit a little bit higher off the ground is about the only practical solution I can think of. Not sure how hard that would be for them to do though.

The ship has to be smaller than the surface of the pad and short enough to fit in the hanger, I think height is why the T7 is a large pad ship.

Oh, I never thought of that. I didn't know height also factored into a ships landing pad size I thought it was just the footprint.
Once I used to think the same until, after a direct comparison, I discovered that the T7 is smaller than the Python, in terms of footprint, and then I realised that the height was the problem.
Which is understandable for hangars, but not for surface landing pads, since height does not matter there, but then it would need a separate branch of code, just to distinguish between hangars and landing pads.

It's little details like this that make a game. ED is not a made game.

When Horizons launched & the SRV was added some ships were too low (the Vulture comes to mind). The landing gear was made to extend a bit further when the SRV was deployed. Presumably that aspect was non-functional, or perhaps it needs to be tweaked to extend a little further.

This function is only used when the ship is landed on terrain, it doesn't affect the ships dimensions when in the hanger of a dock.

Most of the streamers I watched quickly adopted the work-around of immediately turning to avoid hitting the size 2 hardpoint protruding, and when the back was too low regardless of that hardpoint, they simply backed up and exited and entered from the side of the ship. It needs to be fixed but I hope they don't delay the release because of it... I'm super hyped about getting that Pre-built T-8 Stellar version.

Another gripe is the very low polygon door when you walk up the ramp. It's probably placeholder, but the quality is too low.

The Imperial Courier has always had the same problem. Don't expect FDev to fix the Type-8 any time soon.

Don't surface landing pads retract into hangar bays when you access the Shipyard? I think they do, so the height does matter regardless.

Well, this is happening in Odyssey for several of the ships i did ground missions/stuff or exobiology with.

You disembark on foot - ship is very low on the ground, to the point your helmet almost touches the underside of the ship
Board, then deploy the SRV - suddenly the ship stands taller on the landing gear, enough for the SRV to fit under, even if that means the landing gear may not actually rest on the ground 🤷‍♂️
