Ho close can you fly to a black hole?

I'm currently 82km out from one that should have an even horizon of 40km. Anyone been that close before? Should I be worried?

Nope. You can supercruise till emergency drop and still be safe. Don't fly towards it too far though when dropped as your temp will then start to climb.

Done this 100 times, even on Sag A*

I don't think its possible to get down to 68km (where I am now) in SC... (or at least, its not possible for me!). Also, its it just me or is it only the background stellar field that is distorted by the lensing effects> The Companion star seems unaffected.

68km is doable in normal space.

Lensing only works on the background is my observation too.

You must be at a pretty big one, all the ones I've found let me get 24km close :)

And as DoubleSkulls has confirmed, only works on the background. Another sad thing - it has a different effect on skybox stars vs clouds.
