Elite / Frontier Holiday Snaps from Phobos

Dunno about you guys but I may have at one time or another exploited the asteroid and non destructible object bug in FE2 to get my ranking up.

Here is a recent photo from the afore mentioned recently taken by NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. I just love this stuff as it really stretches the minds perception of what we think is out there and what it looks like.

NASA explains that the image was taken "at a distance of about 6,800 kilometers (about 4,200 miles), and is "presented in color by combining data from the camera's blue-green, red, and near-infrared channels".

The blurb continues: "The illuminated part of Phobos seen in the images is about 21 kilometers (13 miles) across. The most prominent feature in the images is the large crater Stickney in the lower right. With a diameter of 9 kilometers (5.6 miles), it is the largest feature on Phobos."

NASA's press release adds: "The new view shows landslides along the walls of Stickney and other large craters: Phobos' striking surface grooves and crater chains; and craters hidden on the moon's dark side illuminated by 'Marsshine'."

Diminutive Phobos is, the New Scientist notes, ultimately doomed since it's "spiralling towards Mars at a rate of 1.8 metres per century". In around 50 million years it will crash into Mars - if the Red Planet's gravity doesn't pull it apart first.

In 2009, Russia will send a robot to the body, which is possibly a captured asteroid, with a view to returning samples to Earth.

Tsk, not an accurate picture at all. This is what Phobos really looks like...

Seriously, though, the NASA release is great stuff :)

Not "Enhancing" your Elite rank there were you Steve?

LOL yeah so do I - It's always somewhat humbling to see these things. Also makes me wish I'd concentrated better at school :D

"Magnificent Desolation"

What is this bug you are referring to?

In FE2 you could sit in front of Phobos and accelerate time whilst shooting it and as it was listed as both an asteroid (destructible) and as an astral body (indestructible) you could shoot it destroy it and the game would instantly recreate it thus getting multiple kills and jacking up your Kill rating - poor mans way of getting to Elite. IMO wrecked the game much like the selling a ship with passengers still on board.

AHEM!! Thats news to me...never heard of that one before :rolleyes::D

How can a bug like that "wreck a game"? If one feels it wrecks the game, they won't use the bug. Ergo, no problem. ;)

I confess to once using the bug about selling a ship with people on board, but I recently found it much more stimulating to earn my millions legitimately, (well, apart from using the "bug" which lets you fly at tens of thousands of kms a second towards your destination, then whacking on the auto-pilot and having it magically slow you down in time!), so that I could afford any ship I wanted. :D

I'm normally above exploiting bugs, but if anyone knows the one that allows to raise one's military rank, let me know. ;)

I've used something called BUFFET (it's on Steve's frontierastro pages), which is more of a hack than a bug, but it helps! :hangs head in shame:

In my defence, I didn't use it to advance my military rank, I used it to mount a Thargoid laser and Class 4 MD to the standard Saker Mk III. Max distance = 4285.71 light years

I did that using a hex editor and a doc on hacking i downloaded from jades ffe site (RIP Jades FFE Site).
