I love flying around in the dark. But, sometimes I do need to see where I'm going. Especially in dark rings, or canyons. Lol
Some ships headlights are also incredibly useless, so may aswell not even be on. Lol
So here's my suggestion, that is not only useful, but pays a bit of homage to the original Elite.
Holo-Vision
Probably could do with a less cheesy name. Lol
Holo-Vision is a HUD overlay, that renders what you can currently see, in a sort wireframe hologram!
Ships, objects, terrain, etc are all rendered in a similar manner to our holograms on the HUD, scanner, and loading screens.
Distant objects are rendered in a paler shade as not to confuse. Some objects would be colour coded, like terrain, so anything infront of them doesn't blend in.
Textures, starfield, and most effects are either removed, or replaced with "retro" or simplified versions.
Holo-Vision doesn't work if the canopy is blown, and turns blank if your sensors go offline.
Weapon impacts very temporarily disturb the overlay, much like the current HUD impact effects. Sensor damage can cause Holo-Vision malfunctions, such as incorrect or missing items, and glitches.
Unlike normal MK1 eyeball vision, your Holo-Vision relies entirely on sensors to display, so unresolved contacts are just a glitchy sort of contact, like on the radar. If it's cold/far enough away, it doesn't show up at all.
Stars do not flare up your display.
The multicrew gunner camera can also be set to use the Holo-Vision mode. As well as the camera suite.
The main bonus to this, is obviously being able to see everything, in the dark.
The other bonus is also a sense of a "tactical camera", especially for the multicrew gunner.
You could even enable it for h SLF to give the feeling of remote control of you so wish.
And there would likely be a huuuge FPS boost due to the simplified, well, everything.
The downside is it's obviously a lot of work. And colourblind people may struggle.(sorry).
It's all entirely optional of course.

Thoughts?
I'd make some mock-ups of how it could look, but my paint skills are a bit weak. Lol
