Holy moley (my first supergiant)

haha, pretty much what I looked like when I first got there. It looked just like every other sun until I realized that I dropped out, not at mere 3-5 LS away, but almost 5000 or so. I just now went out to take that picture of SOL, for a proper comparison and have to say that was worth it :D

Wonderful comparison shots.

Is it the largest star in the known Milky Way? Which has just been re-defined as up to 50% larger than previously thought - so I heard?

The largest known one, UY Scuti, is roughly 20% larger (1708 SOL radii vs 1420). However if Canis Majoris is really 50% bigger than thought it would be the biggest known star.

Where did you hear it? last time I checked UY Scuti still held the mantle of the largest known star.

Largest star? Not sure really. Astronomers just discovered this last year: http://www.universetoday.com/110205/astronomers-identify-the-largest-yellow-hypergiant-star-known/

For those of you wanting to see hypergiants up close here is the wiki page of known hypergiant stars: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypergiant

I plan to go see some of them myself. Hopefully soon! Seeing this thread really makes me want to go out and see this stuff in person! :D

**Edit**
I just searched the galaxy map for all the hypergiants listed on the wiki page. I was disappointed to find so few in game! I was only able to find 10 from the list. 3 of them were blue, 4 yellow and 3 red. Some of them were fairly close to where I'm based: Brani. The one furthest away from me was 6k LY away! That would be some trip!
The ones I found were:
HD 80077
HD 268835
HD 32034
Rho Cassiopeiae
V509 Cassiopeiae
HD 7583
HD 268757
VV Cephei
RW Cephei
and of course VY Canis Majoris

This doesn't mean there aren't others. FD might have them listed slightly different than what I searched for. An example was IRAS 1837-0604 was listed in game as IRAS 1837+0604. Just that little switch is enough to throw off a search as you all know.

Hope this helps you all!

There's much debate how exactly big the biggest stars are, like Canis and Beteguese, because they are ejecting so much material. They'd look less like a conventional star and more like a giant explosion.

That IS the Canis Majoris. I thought I said it already in the OP. Too bad, since there are larger stars than Majoris in the real life galaxy. Atleast Eta Carinae is in the game.

Sometimes I always skip over stuff. Terrible habit. UY Scuti is currently the largest star discovered, but it's not in elite unfortunately.

HR 5171a is the largest known yellow hypergiant. There are other types of behemoth stars, like luminous blue variables (LBV's), red hypergiants, blue supergiants etc. If you read the article you'd see the radius is 1300 times that of our Sun.

UY Scuti is a red supergiant and has a 1700 solar radii, and is currently the largest star known (atleast to my knowledge)

They definitely aren't the neatly defined balls of plasma we have in the game at the moment. That's a simulation how a red giant would really look like:

unfortunately hr 5171 a is not correct in game its has a solar radius of only 63 :(
here's a pic of VY Canis A from 10,000 ls with its companion star VY Canis Major B at 1 ls, vy canis major b is almost the smallest known star! :)

and Betelgeuse rises over Betelgeuse 1 at 1780ls :)

I am on my way there at this very moment!

QUick one though, I cannot get external or 4k screenshots working. Is there any config tweaking needed to enable this?

Bear in mind that not all of the stars listed on that page are in this galaxy. Though I understand that some of the ones that are are still missing.

Rigel is worth a visit. It's not as big, but it's a tad hotter :)
(also, you don't arrive at the supergiant when you jump into the system, so you get to approach it, and keep approaching it, and go "aren't I about to hit it? Oh no, it's REALLY BIG" and so forth)

The hi-res screenshots only work in solo mode (and private groups if I'm not completely mistaken). For the debug camera, check whether the corresponding keybind is set in the options. Should be ctrl+alt+space by default, but it's possible that it's not set.
