Newcomer / Intro Homebase

New player? Ray Gateway in Diaguandri (sp?) is often suggested since you get the 15% Li Yong Rui discount (or I THINK so, might have changed ith PP2); Jameson Memorial in Shinrarta Dehzra after you get elite in something since it has lots of people and all ships and modules at a discount; those kinds of places you're more likely to run in to other cmdrs, many of whom like to shoot people down for no reason, and many of whom are neutral or friendly. Other options is to find somewhere that has nearby activities you like to do (rings for miniming/bounty hunting, good trade routes, etc). Artemis Lodge in Celaeno has a killer view but I don't think it's that close to the heart of the bubble and may not have good outfitting. A high tech station could be a good choice; check the shipyard and outfitting to see if they've got a good selection of ships and modules. tl;dr: find whaever floats your boat! :)

It really depends on what you like doing or do a lot of. If you want to live in an awesome star system and be really close to the center of the bubble, I recommend Slink's Eye.
Kelleam Ring has a good selection of ships and modules, a manufactured mat trader and a haz rez right in the back yard. I lived there for a long while before I bought a carrier.

You might think this daft but ... An important consideration for me (apart from distance to star, module and ship stock, etc) was the ATC voice. Some perfectly acceptable stations were completely useless to me because of either the "John Wayne with loose dentures" or the gruff-voiced "Texas" woman. Since I would be arriving at my home base a lot, there is no way I would subject myself to such torment every time. ;)

In fact my long-time favourite base was in the system Ix but some player group has taken charge and the delightful female voice (I think Verity Croft) is no longer the ATC there.

What system would be the best 'homebase'?
You'll make much faster progress if you don't have a base. You don't need one, as you can transfer stuff between stations while you have a cup of tea, then you can always go where the action is to get loads of stuff.

Concentrate on making loads of money so that you can get a fleet carrier to use as a mobile base. You get money from platinum mining, pirate massacre missions from Ngalinn, Scanning exobiology, and Trading by doing the mining missions from Cubeo and buying the stuff in Sarahath.

When you have the fleet carrier, do the Guardian unlocks - PP, PD, shield boosters and FSD booster, then sort out all the engineers. When you've done all that, come back here and I'll give you a list of what to do next.

The 15% Li Yong Rui discount does sound good. I have slowly been moving closer. At lembava now. I was thinking of trying to get into laser mining starting with a Mandalay, but I can't find a place that sells one. Inara points to places to get one, but they don't even have it listed in the ships.

Look up fox’s guide to engineers, base yourself somewhere central, Tertra Trash is right, Diaguandri, Ray Gateway is good, material trader there too! My alt commander is at Ohm City in LHS 20, rings nearby for catching bad guys, mining etc. central to most stuff. Good luck!

It is not available for credits in game yet - at the moment you have to buy a pre-built one from the DLC store.

(Yes I am annoyed about that too.)

If you are looking at mining then why not have a think about the Python (the Mk1 not the new MkII one) - it is my favourite mining ship. (Of course it is more expensive so you need to consider that I suppose.)

Some of the Imperial ships require you to reach a certain rank with the Empire.
  1. Courier - Master
  2. Clipper - Baron
  3. Cutter - Duke
There is a similar system to get access to the Federal ships.

thanks for the info. a Python would run about 75 million, I have a bit over 35 million. I noticed looking up the clipper a rank has to be done. BD-15 447 might be an option. Guess I have to figure out now to get the Baron rank (have to go to ngalinn?)

You need to build up some cash Cmdr. Do you have a ship that can haul 200-300 tons?

Go and do the Cubeo mining missions. They'll give you the Cutter rank (Duke) in no time as well as billions in cash. Don't mine the stuff. Buy it from Sarahath and only accept missions for metals and metal ores. You can start with a Type 6, then a Type 8, then Type 9 , then Cutter. A type 8 is 50 million: https://s.orbis.zone/qLLX
Invest any money you make from he first missions in the donation missions until you have max rep with the factions, then you get the 50 million missions.

Which brings up the sage advice given often on the forum to "never fly without the rebuy" - i.e. always keep a reserve of at least 3 times the insurance cost (shown in the RH panel) when building and fitting-out a new ship. Many a poor soul in the past have found themselves in a sad way having stretched to a Python only to find they got destroyed and couldn't afford the insurance payment.

The Python Mk1 was particularly renowned for this.

The old advice used to be when buying a ship have 3-5 times the full hull price in credits before buying to allow for the cost of new bigger modules, which would be an Asp Explorer with your budget. Nowadays with much higher credit earnings possible while these figures are still relevant they no longer represent a significant delay.

ASP Explorer is what I've been using, primarily for laser mining platinum. The best solution is cash, cash, cash!

(I play Horizons solo. Never even tried open play)

I didn't buy the ASP till I had about 30 million I think it was. It was 6.6 million, plus some upgrades. A buyback is currently about 1.3 million. It's now getting fairly maxed out on modules and I'm now starting to engineer the modules I can. I have spent maybe 12 million(?) total so far. I'm now at 102 million. I'm not considering anything new till I'm at least 200 million.

For me, platinum has been an acceptable cash cow for now, with about 15-18 million a load. I could get a better price but where I'm mining, it's just a 3k Ls supercruise away from a buyer, no jump needed, so the lower price is a fair trade-off for the short trip to a buyer.

I started out with a Type-6 doing various things until I settled on platinum mining. Once you start doing something, you learn things that you wish were better, larger cargo space, jump range, modules available, etc. All of that has a cost. The need for more cash is a vicious cycle!

You can only do what you can afford. I'd recommend doing what you can with what you have for as long as you can tolerate it, building up your bank account. Resist the urge to buy a new ship. You'll get there, eventually, just stick with it. Grind for cash, then do it again, and again.

Personally, I expect to be grinding for cash till I'm at least 1 billion. But then at that point, I still couldn't afford a fleet carrier or a star system! what!

You should be able to make an easy 50 million an hour mining platinum in Paesia using an Asp, so a Python should be achievable in two hours. Here's an Asp build I'd use for that. You don't need a DSS for the haz RES in Paesia. Don't worry about the pirates. They're quite cooperative when you get to know them: https://s.orbis.zone/qMhl

Here's an old instruction I made on how to mine in Paesia. It's all common sense really - no special skill needed:

Hi :)

What system would be the best 'homebase'?

I personally favour a High Tech / Refinery Coriolis station, with a material trader (data).
Get Allied with all the factions there and have a good rep. Loads of high paid missions plus good trading prospects etc.
There are other benefits too, depending where the system is situated, generally.
Jack :)
