Homeworld Remastered on sale - should i buy it?

Its on sale at gog.com.
I have always liked space sims, but in all the ones i have played i have been the pilot in the cockpit.
Even x3 which i guess one might argue has stragety elements, and that i liked a lot, had a cockpit view.
So im on the fence, what did you all think of Homeworld and Homeworld remastered?

Well, it comes down to taste, but Homeworld is an RTS game, so you wont be in a cockpit. It has a great single player campaign that is very captivating and great visuals as well. The gameplay is also really great. If you are not into RTS style games then it might not be worth it to you.

In its day the original Homeworld was a real leap forward. Wonderful, intuitive interface, great gameplay, good plot, good options for online play. I played it to death for months and created several maps and mods. Great game.

I never played the remaster, as I was played out and couldn't bring myself to do it all again, however if you have never played it then the new version with upgraded graphics is the way to go, and I'd recommend it, particularly if it's on sale. It is not a first person game, as you have noted - that's the only downside I can think of in your case.

The Homeworld Remastered Lowdown

When the remaster was announced I was greatly excited, as I played many many hours of Homeworld, sometimes just to watch the ships. Unfortunately, the original code for the group dynamcis was unavailable/unable to be fixed, and so the Remastered version is actually the code from Homeworld II. This means that the crucial group movement formations are not the ones from Homeworld but are from HW2.

In many cases (mine among them) people felt a bit cheated. Sure, the graphics are punched-up but Homeworld II was not nearly beloved as HW itself, and the movements of ships is a scattershot approach.

If you haven't played Homeworld itself, you might be able to play the Remastered with no problems, but the original game mechanics are why Homeworld took GOTY status and is now a legendary game.

Gearbox says that they have fully-redone the original mechanics of ship flight and formations after the outcry of "bait and switch." For this sale price I might pick it up, although I already have all the Homeworld games. Since this edition does include the original Homeworld, you'll be fine if you want to play the original game.

I will probably buy it at this price point.
