General / Off-Topic HONDA leaves F1

Honda one of the four F1 engines manufacter will leave Formula 1 at the end of the 2021 season.

The Japanese brand now wishes to move towards new energies with the objective of “carbon neutrality”.

And redirects its resources, in research and development in the fields of future technologies.

A page in Formula 1 history closes.

Shocked by this and could be bad news for Formula 1. Maybe Honda are concentrating on full electric technology and will join Formula E setup as there may be no point pursuing the hybrid tech anymore for them.
And will another manufacturer take their place? With the current economic issues and environmental issues I don't think so. Even hybrid technology is becoming old hat now.

Sad, as Honda only re-joined five years ago and after a few years of jokes and mishaps now have the second best engine on the grid, with Verstappen driving it to it's limits.

But the other bad news for F1 is that Mercedes have raised the bar again this season and perhaps Honda have thought 'can we plough more money to make the engine win a championship?' and decided not to. The prolonged dominance of one team is wrecking the sport.

Also bad news for Red Bull Racing too. They had an acrimonious split from Renault and almost surely will have to return to them in 2022. They may think to leave F1 too.

F1 with gasoline engines will become obsolete in a few years

Ultimately, it's not bad for the planet since F1 is the showcase for car manufacturers..

Electric will kill motorsport for many, the sound is a vital part of the experience, you see a car/bike then hear it's engine configuration as it screams past. They all sound different, V8, V10, V12, inline, boxer, 4 stroke, 2 stroke. E just does not have that at all, it's like a football match with no crowd, no atmosphere. Although for me F1 has been dead since the dominance of Mercedes (yawn) and before that it was on it's death bed due to over reliance on aero grip. RIP F1. Luckily I love motorbikes so can watch proper racing there.

They can simulate the noise of the engines with computer software ?

Good for them. F1 died in 2014 after years of decline. This zombie version of once greatest motor sport on the planet is an insult to all the giants who built it.
(Not talking about the drivers, of course)

It won't be the same and seeing as weight saving is at the top of what teams try to do, I can't see them being happy about having al the weight of speakers to blare it out at the decibels needed to match what an exhaust can do.

I know I'm a dying breed of petrol head, but it "will" sound worse.

Proper motorsport on 4-wheels with real engine sounds is dead for over 10 years now, not shedding a single tear for what it is now.

GTs still sound good (although not as good as the past) V8 Supercars still "thunder". Luckily for me motorbikes are still awesome, although lost the thunder of a Ducati V twin, but gained the roar of the V4, still got the banshee wails of the screaming inline 4, and the cross plane crankshafted Yamaha doing it's own thang!! :) All that engine noise goodness goes with "electric".

I'm intersted to see if the new top level Protypes in Endurance racing can sound any good.

I fully understand mass market stuff should be electric, but sports should be the pinnacle and at the mo electric is not, it's a neccessity for the planet, motorsports shouldn't be about that IMO.

I look at Electric cars now and the range is just pathetic for what I need, and I don't fancy spending half and hour in services to "refuel", and that's quick charging which by all accounts seriously kills the battery.

Very disappointing to see that Honda are leaving F1, especially given that all three remaining engine-suppliers already have a "factory" team.

I bet RBR are currently looking into building an engine for themselves.
Kind of a shame that they've been running with Infiniti and, more recently, Aston Martin branding on the car.
I guess the ideal solution would have been to convince Ford to build them an engine under the AM brand, but I guess that ship has sailed with Racing Point becoming the AM team.

No idea if Racing Point/AM will continue to use the Merc' engine or whether AM will supply an engine but I guess it's academic, given that even if AM brings it's own engine it'd still put RBR in the position of being a customer team.

Seems like Merc' are never going to supply RBR and I'm not sure RBR would want a Ferrari engine, given that they know they can build a better chassis so they only way Ferrari are ever likely to be better is by cheating - and RBR won't want to be in a position where they can't accuse Ferrari of cheating without risking their engine supply.
So, back to the Renault engine they tried so hard to get rid of for years? 🤷‍♂️

Also, Formula E is garbage.
The cars can't even complete a race and their performance is on par with a modern hot-hatch.
Tells you all you need to know about Formula E when they can build a street circuit in a day by erecting a few fences and tyre walls.

First thing Formula E shoud have done is use swappable battery packs and allow teams to use a variety of different sized batteries.
That way, they could run lighter cars and pitstops would become strategic.

Most GTs sound crap, it begun about 10 years ago McLaren entered the scene, and GT1 plus GT3 were mixed together. The last proper sound I recon were R8 V10 and the DB7 V12... but then it was still a far cry from the era when 575 Maranellos, Viger GTSs, Lambo Murcielagos, Ford GTs and Saleen S7-s duked it out on the track.

Environment is a valid concern, but by going electric we're mostly displacing emissions and also until batteries cannot be properly recycled it is downright dangerous to think/propagate that we can consume our way out of this - until then my old V8 is more environmentally friendly than a Tesla. We need to commute less and ditch flying to tropical getaways.

Edited the first sentence for wording

Too bad, I found this principle interesting. :D

I dunno the Porsche GTE cars sounds pretty good, but yeah Aston Martin going v8 from a V12 was a shame. Oh god that era of GT1 was awesome, I'm so glad I saw some of it. V12's, V10s, V8s......you could tell the car from the sound it made.

Not forgetting lithium is a finite resource and WILL run out at some point like petroleum based fuels....can car batteries be recycled?

I read that cars are limited to 225 km/h.

So I don't really see the handicap of a few extra kilos. 🤔

Yeah, the Porsche flat six is still there as well as the R8 V10 is also around, and the Corvette C7R as the best of all, but otherwise the rest of the contemporary race cars are muted. DTM straight sounds like vacuum cleaner.
So yeah, we got right the end of the great motorsport. And I appreciate that I can daily* an oldschool V8 too, that will be a distant memory in just a few decades.
*rather weekly these days

Lithium is not only finite as well, but it is very energy intensive to acquire and leaves a lot of destruction behind too.
