Honest question for pirates everywhere

Let me say up front: This is not meant to be a discussion on whether pirating is good or bad. If you don't like pirating, please refrain from commenting on this thread.

This is a question I wanted to ask pirates. I asked it in another thread, but it seems more appropriate to make it its own.

I am a trader and always play in open mode. I very much like the fact that other players are pirates and still others are pirate hunters (not that those are the only 3 valid roles or anything.)

I've read a sentiment a few times offered by pirates which is along the lines of "Don't kill the golden goose" when it comes to the players they pirate. That is, it is better for profits if you can let people live so you can prey on them again. Repeat customers and all that.

I very much like and appreciate this sentiment. As a trader, I'd much rather be given the option to drop some/all cargo and it makes for more entertaining gameplay.

But I am not sure I follow the logic of it.

Blowing away a 'customer' doesn't remove them as a future customer since no one ever dies. At most, you might get on their ignore list, but that would happen regardless of whether your pirating succeeds. I understand that some of their cargo might be destroyed in their ship's destruction, but there is a good chance that you cannot carry all they had, anyway. Finally, IF they throw some cargo at you to appease you, there is a good chance it isn't their most valuable cargo.

I am really not trying to encourage the "destroy all and pick through the rubble" approach to pirating. If you play a more realistic pirate because you enjoy it or for a sense of honor, I honestly think that is a great reason. And I think it makes the game more fun for all of us. Just wondering if there is a more logical reason for it.

I'll answer it here then. I can only speak for myself. The reason is basically, I don't want anyone to have a bittery experience. Excitement, yes. I play for fun and not for credits. If I was after credits, I'd trade instead.

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.

That's a great attitude. :)

It's a game, after all. We all play to have fun. Piracy adds excitement to trading, but ideally it won't ruin someone's day. Personally I would not want to do that to someone.

I haven't tried piracy in Elite yet, but I'm not opposed to giving it a go, just as I'm not opposed to a PC pirate having a go at me. ;)

The small amount of Pirating I've done so far...

I threaten them... Take a few shots at them...

They drop some cargo... I let them leave.

If they don't drop some cargo... I attack them and get their hull down to about 10% and then let them leave.

Killing them wouldn't be the honourable thing.

Thanks for reiterating that here. I also appreciate the attitude.

Really? That is amazing.
Honestly, if I don't drop cargo, I fully expect to get away or get annihilated.

I don't happen to think that, as a pirate, I should give two craps about anyone's 'bitter experience.'

I have a cargo scanner, if I see that you have good stuff in your cargo hold, I want it. The only reason I wouldn't blow you to smithereens to get that stuff is because blowing off your cargo bay door leads to more booty. (It doesn't get destroyed along with your ship.)

When was the last time you heard of pirates asking their prey "Pardon me, if you wouldn't mind dropping just a few tons of your shipment so I could pick them up... that would be dandy.)?

If doesn't happen like that. You get scanned... I target your cargo hold... you try to run away or fight. If it looks like you're running away too fast, I'll blow your ship up. If you try to fight, I'll blow your ship up. The best move, (if you see the Pirate Jones,) is just to stay still until I blow your door off, or drop ALL of your cargo before I do.

I'm not trying to grief anyone, but pirates don't ask permission before they take your stuff.

Quick question, how do you drop part of your cargo?

I have no problem with being "pirated" (different to PK'd) and would have no problem dropping SOME cargo if I can't fight back, but my keyboard mapping only has eject cargo?

Is there a separate map for dropping say 50% etc? I haven't had to yet, so not sure of the exact procedure! :)

It is slower than just dumping it all, but you can go into the right-side menu under cargo and select which and how much cargo you want to release.

THIS is the best I've read in quite a while! I think that this also will make more people want to play open-for-all. It sure makes me jump into the "real world" of Elite Dangerous right now.

+rep and respects, big time! :)

I don't mean to speak for Cmdr Fremen, but I think the point is that he is able to separate the character he is playing from himself. I get the impression that his character would kill if needed, but he would prefer to help make the game more fun for others, too.

(It doesn't get destroyed along with your ship.)

Thanks. I was misinformed, I guess.

Right side menu, select cargo tab, pretty self explanatory from there on in.

You're right, you shouldn't. I do.

We usually do before having an excellent cup of tea while talking about the good old times and of course the weather.

I like you, Cmdr. :)

However, there seems to be a rash of people that consider this the only way pirating should be, otherwise it's 'griefing.'

Having a bitter experience is or I should say -- can -- be fun as a trader. If you run into a pirate, that should ruin your whole damn day... (in game time.)

People should be shocked if some boy scout highwayman asks permission before they plunder their merchant vessel. I hope they see it as the exception and not the rule.

If you don't want to get pirated (and vaporized in the process,) hire a wing of escorts... arm yourself to the teeth ... or get really good at running away.

If you get a few knocks on my shields or even take them down, I would take that to be the equivalent of "asking" for my cargo. I don't think a pirate has to literally type a message (though I wouldn't object to it).

There is sort of a body language out there. The same way that my turning to face you with hardpoints out is my saying "no". (And your subsequent destruction of me is saying "Fine. Be that way.")

Absolutely.

If you dump all of your cargo before I'm done blowing your door off... you'll probably make it out alive. I wouldn't bet my mortgage on it, but the chances are pretty good.

I'm not going to wait around while your friends or the cops show up though... that would be stupid.

This is another reason why solo play should not kinda merge with multiplay. Should be two separate games. The whole point of trading or smuggling is that in the back of your mind you could be expected to give away your cargo at gun point and you might be able to devise a way to get out of it, Maybe. Otherwise the game does not work for multiplay
