Proposal Discussion Hoping for an interesting discussion [Space Sims]

Hello,

Second post, please be kind! :)

Ok, like everyone here, we all like Space Sim games.

What are your favourite ones?

My top 3: [MMO stylee]

1) EVE Online.
2) RSI Star Citizen.
3) Elite Dangerous.

Past ones:

1) IWar1 and 2 [Ocean]
2) Elite [Original], Frontier (Good effort, but ended up being boring).
3) ???

 :)

#1 is Cosmic Balance (1&2 combined) - showing my age too LOL
#2 has to be MOO
#3 nothing else has come close to what I want  (maybe Dangerous :D??)

Not an MMO fan, but will dabble. I've found most MMO's favour the "avid" player more than the casual, with obvious results… so I usually go out of my way to avoid them.

Here is hoping this one is better built ;)

Elite
Oolite
Orbitersim is maybe the best newish one.
Vega Strike isn't bad
I also really enjoy the Derek Smart Battlecruiser games, but I am rare in this.
The other space game called Dangerous is pretty good, the one at whoisdangerous.com , to avoid confusion. I like that I can play it on my phone or the PC and it syncs the saves online. Great game too.

EVE I liked, played for a few years but it isn't a space sim.

Also am enjoying Kerbal Space Program.

Edit - almost forgot Evochron - that is a great game that I must get back into at some stage, but I am waiting for planets to get scaled properly - that is an immersion breaker for me.

Lots of those I haven't tried. I briefly tried Evochron, looked interesting but not worth paying for it imo.

Good that I am both payer/player and supporter of my top 3 :)

Also seems that another giantic thread is already on the main forum, but it was tdlr :)

1) Elite - always and forever.

2) Wing Commander - loved the "interactive movie" elements and the plot, but it could have done with some more freedom to wander when not on a mission. I'd love to see what the rest of the ship interiors looked like.

3) ORB (Orbital Research Base) - a good little resource / RTS / space sim. Cheap as chips in your nearest computer store bargain bin.

Looking forward to:

1) Elite Dangerous (duh)

2) Limit Theory - really looking forward to this, and it's probably the only game I'll play where I know nearly everything about the code.

3) Quantum Flux - another Kickstarter I followed, a plot-driven game with 2.5D action and retro graphics that looks pretty good.

favourite space games not including Elite would be

Colony Wars 1&2
kerbal space program.
Feelancer.
homeworld 1&2.
Sins of a solar empire + expansions.

Ah tactical space games, also interesting. Original Homeworld, groundbreaking. Homeworld 2 also good. Homeworld Cataclysm also interesting. The 3rd dimension element to that Genre was very refreshing. SoSE - interesting but more of a 2d click fest which I generally dislike (unless you are PvPing in EVE Online ;) )

True, MMOs do favour the avid player, however, increasingly so (also worryingly so in some respects) the more casual player.

EVE Online is good because it is a game with many many aspects (and also now being more accessible to new players with the new expansion).

Both RSI and Elite seem to be feeding off each other and rightly so, with two of the big boys on the space sim scene running with their ideas, and Kudos to them (and uber kudos to kickstarter - what a great website).

I really tried to get into Kerbal Space Programs. I had the demo but it did not entice me enough really. The bought version was pretty expensive. I see it has dropped in price a fair bit, am thinking if I should try it again I don't know.

where can I get hold of the D3D version?

Sorry everyone I really should have used multiquote.

Space SIm Central as some people suggested is a good place then there is also frontierastro.co.uk and also eliteforever.co.uk and of course the Elite/Frontier thread on this very forum :)

Depends on how strict you want to be about the word "sim". I'd argue that two games that might even come close to qualifying in the strict sense are Frontier: First Encounters and Frontier: Elite II. Most of the others on the market are just flight sims in space (or, even worse, simple shooters with no physics whatsoever to worry about).

Sadly you can't include those as being your "favorite" ones as they are not released yet. Granted you could be reacting to Hype in which case SC would be top as RSI have gone overboard whereas ED took a more conservative approach.

Time will tell though.

Thargon throws a kerbal shaped tomato into the discussion hoping that this will liven it up.

So, what space sims is everyone currently playing, or it is just procrastinating on the forums? ;)

Not many.
I got halfway through Freelancer, but got tired of the "shoot - GOTO - shoot - GOTO" play pattern, which was extremely transparent.
Played a bit of Darkstar One, but that game is even more obvious in the goto/shoot issue.

Started X2: The Threat, but frankly the stretching issue on 16:9 screens makes me dizzy.
Started X3: Albion Prelude, but somehow can't muster up the desire to do anything in it. There's just no incentive to do anything from the get-go (and given the bad state of starting ships, nearly all missions offered are impassable as well).

That's about it. I guess right now I'm just not in the mood for space sims - that's bound to change in a few months, to be sure. But also I do want *new* spacegame stuff, not ones that I've played through multiple times. That overfamiliarity might be the true underlying reason why I'm not enjoying them anymore.
