Hoping for the best.

I have been playing Elite since the days of the original on the BBC Micro.

Beta-backer for ED and in the early days I very much enjoyed my progression through all the ships, ranks etc. etc. but really have not enjoyed ED that much since PP or Engineers even one little bit.
More a reflection on me than on ED I am sure.
The recent price-drop of the Oculus Rift was too hard to resist and I confess the prospect of VR has me looking forward to flying once again.
I just hope it lives up to my expectations. :)

My biggest concern is that I really do have to wear glasses and I am not sure how feasible this will be.
I'm sure others are similarly challenged and I do hope to hear that it is all ok. Else there will be a complete OR bundle up for sale pretty shortly. Ha! Ha!

Depends more on your frames thsn anything.

If you have those fairly square specs where the glass extend to below your cheekbone your are going to have problems.
My specs are wider and thinner and I have no issue.

If you need to wear glasses for distance then chances are you will need them in the Rift and like TorTorden says it depends on the size of your frames.

But every problem has a solution: https://vr-lens-lab.com/ I don't have these but intend to order some when money is less tight. For the time being my glasses are just small enough to scrape the foam around the headset.

You can buy after market facial interfaces for the rift that make it comfier and put it further away from your face to create more space for glasses. I'm waiting on a set arriving, but while I don't wear glasses my wife does, so I've ordered the pro set with standard depth facial adapter that takes the comfier pads and an extended deeper set for my wife to use with her glasses, I'll let you know how she gets on with it if she recommends the adapter. Like TorTorden, my wifes glasses are smaller lensed, and obviously dennis taylor shaped glasses or such likes will have issues inside the rift which is essentially a set of goggles.

Thanks, I hope it works well for you. :)

Now that's a good idea! All is not lost....just a little bit more cost....maybe.

Well, i don't know, if it lives up to your expectations, but i can say, that i will never play Elite on a monitor again.

At first, i was pretty disappointed with the quality, but after setting HMD quality and graphic settings right, VR simply rocks. The experience is second to nothing, i have played so far. And this is especially true for simulations.
I don't wear glasses, but two friends of mine do and they do not need them in the Rift, due to different focus distances than playing on a monitor.

The extra depths perception, freedom of head and body movement and the lack of any peripheral visual disturbances, make VR an incredible experience. I also played Elite back in 1984 and all prequels. Until i got VR, Elite was a good game, with VR it is my afterwork space vacation... Awesome.

Make sure you have decent GPU. I had a GTX970, when i started playing un VR. Back then it was already incredible, but today with a GTX11080ti, the experience is even better. Decent framerate and best shader settings really make a difference.

I hope you enjoy your new toy, especially with Elite.

I just got a set of these https://widmovr.com/product/oculus-rift-prescription-lenses-adapter/#prettyPhoto They're great, can't recommend them enough. And with these there is no spherical distortion that others report with vr-labs lenses.

If you're near-sighted like I am, you'll still need your glasses (or other form of correction) for things to appear clear. If you're far-sighted, you'll be fine without corrective lenses.

The biggest problem with glasses in the Rift is of course the size of the frames, as others have mentioned. What some people do is buy a second set of glasses, in the "Benjamin Franklin" style (small circular lenses). My everyday glasses are reasonably small, and they worked, but they also made contact with the Rift's lenses and started to scuff them up. My first solution was to buy a set of scratch resistant stickers (48mm size is perfect, but these come from China and take a long time to arrive), which helped, but wasn't a true solution. I still use these though, since they also help to hide existing scuffs.

As others noted, you can go to VR Lens Lab's website and order lenses. I have a set of these, and they're wonderful! The only downside really, is that they induce some spherical distortion, due to being convex toward your eye, instead of concave. The effect is more noticeable toward the edges than in the center. I've mostly gotten used to it, but it's pretty obvious when you use the commodities interface in stations, since it's large and completely flat. The wrap-around interfaces, such as in station services after docking, look good. To get an idea of what to expect, flip your glasses upside-down and look through the front of them.

Another solution, and I have this too, is to get the velour face pads and adapter set from VR-Cover's site. This will push the Rift off of your face slightly more than the the foam pads that come with the Rift. This slightly reduces your field of view, but leaves a little more room for your glasses. If I had gotten this first, I might not have gotten the lens inserts, since it would have prevented my glasses from rubbing on the Rift lenses. But my glasses also fit OK otherwise, whereas many other types of glasses might not have fit. I'm happy that I have both the lenses and the pads though, since it's convenient and comfortable. VR Cover sells a larger pad adapter, but if you get the Velour pads, they're already thicker anyway, so their standard adapter is fine. It's a little pricey to get these though. But the upside is that they also leave less "racoon face" on you after playing for a while, and don't mash your nose in as much as Rift will with the stock pads. The other caveat is that their Velcro is terrible, and the velour pads don't stay in place well at the bottom. I've gotten used to that and it works fine if you just push it in place when you put the headset on.

One last thing I will mention about the VR-Cover glasses sized interface is that the overall FOV is reduced by about a centimetre. It is like looking through binoculars, more than you normally get anyway. You do get used to it, but it's worth keeping in mind.

Have you ever tried contacts? That's what I do I just use contacts. I'm near sighted so I need contacts to see far. So when I have my contacts in I can't see things close up so well which has an added bonus in VR because the contacts change my focal point beyond the SDE. Without contacts in my near sightedness kicks in and my focal point is on the SDE.
