Hopper is empty... What is the Hopper?

In my refinery page on top it's written "HOPPER IS EMPTY".

What does it mean? What am I missing?

hop·per1/ˈhäpər/Submit
noun
1.
a container for a bulk material such as grain, rock, or trash, typically one that tapers downward and is able to discharge its contents at the bottom.

I guess a hopper is like a funnel or a queue that supplies the refinery? It's empty when there's nothing in it to refine?

It just means that there are no fragments deposited in it at the moment - the hopper is what scooped / collected mining fragments are deposited into - it refines fragments into their constituent parts and passes those refined materials into the appropriate (or a new, empty) refinery bin. When a bin fills up, it transfers that consolidated (100%) unit (tonne) of material to a cargo rack, if there is free capacity in the cargo racks.

Literally means the hopper is empty; it's not holding any fragments to be refined.

Like the guy above posted, a hopper is generally used to feed materials into something... in this case, feed the mineral fragments into the refinery and produce refined materials.

Think of it like an "input storage bay" for the machinery.

Those are fragments that have been refined and placed into canisters. But the canisters are not full yet, so won’t go into cargo storage. Collect more fragments for the hopper above.

Flimley

But I do have fragments.

Those are not fragments - that is material that has been separated from the mining fragments and passed into bins, awaiting more material to be refined from further mining fragments until the bin reaches 100% at which point the bin empties and you get 1 unit (tonne) passed into your cargo bay and that bin is then available for further processed materials.

If you watch your refinery as limpets pass mining fragments into it you will see that the top (i.e. the hopper) shows the two constituents of that fragment.

But I do have fragments.

For example: Cobalt 29% means that the canister is almost a third full.
You will need to gather more ore in your hopper, which is then refined.
If there is cobalt in it, it will be dumped in the waiting cobalt canister until it is 100% full.
When full it will be put in your cargo hold.
Same goes for the gallite and the indite.

Para Handy types faster than me :)

Guys I still don't understand... [noob]

When it gets 100% it becomes cargo of course.. This I already know. But you will never see it at 100% because the seed is immediately set free so it goes back to 0%.

So what's the hopper in this process?

The Hopper hold the unrefined ore that your limpets just deposited in the refinery. In fact the hopper can hold several different types of ore at the same time. The ore goes from the hopper into the refinery and is process, with the different ores being separated into bins. When your hopper is empty that just means that nothing new has been collected and all the current ore has been processed by the refinery.

What Mooka said.

The hopper is simply the place where all the unrefined material gets dumped, no matter what it is. The ship needs a place to gather all the different unprocessed ores before they get processed in the refinery. This place is the hopper.
It will then be sorted out and refined in your refinery and end up in separate containers in your cargo hold.

also when your cargo is full but your limpets are still bringing back chunks you can fill all your hoppers with the last bits of material, when you sell the cargo in station whats left in your hoppers will be refined then

So what's the hopper in this process?

When you collect mining fragment it goes to hopper.
mining fragment can be composed of multiple minerals - it's broken apart there in the hopper and those mineral fragments then go to corresponding bin.

Most of the time you'll not see anything in the hopper, because it's processing those fragments fast (it's possible though, but you must watch that page when new fragment is being colected), but if all your bins would be occupied (in process of refining them to 100% -meaning there would be no EMPTY bin) and you would collect mining fragment composed of something else (mineral you don't have on the bin list), then you would see that hopper is not empty - it's blocked with those new fragments, because there's no bin to put them in. It would not accept any new fragment then - you'll need to manually empty it (or some bin) to continue collecting fragments and refining them.

This^^^.
Works as a holding area for if the system's backed up.
Kinda thing.
