Ship Builds & Load Outs Horizon: exploration ship

My trusty Asp explorer will be retroffited for the Horizon release.

I plan to get some SRV for exploration purpose.

Should I fit a cargo bay for what I may collect on ground, on is that totally irrelevant?

You will definitely be finding cargo on planets, and your SRV can only carry two canisters. I would definitely keep a Cargo Hold on your Asp to carry any found cargo back to a station for sale. Also, some missions will have you looking for an Occupied Escape Pod. I didn't test to see if the cargo in the SRV is an addition to your existing cargo capacity.

Also, all cargo I found on planet surfaces was LEGAL salvage, so having room to make "free money" is a sound strategy - I found 6 canisters of Gold that I had to shuttle back and forth to my ship to gather, making 50,000 CR from a single location.

While you may find cannisters, they really have no value for explorers. Why would you take on random cargo to reduce your jump range? Why would you want cargo anyway? Sure, it may be a couple thousand credits, but if you're a thousand light years out, cargo is wasted space. All of the synthesizing materials live in the SRV, so you do not need a cargo bay for crafting materials. As a deep-space explorer, you do not need the storage space for exploration. My refit Asp has no cargo bays, but it does have a SRV and landing suite.

At the same time, I have a different ship for serious planetary stuff (Orca!), and that ship does indeed have cargo space for trinkets I find. I just don't do deep-space exploration in that ship.
