Horizon holdouts need the new Python MK2 availability to be made perfectly clear

Will Elite Dangerous Horizons PC players with Odyssey version 4.0 live get access to the Python MK2 May 7th and be able to buy it for credits Aug 7? Or are the new ship variants being paywalled behind the Odyssey DLC completely?

I think (I could be wrong) if you own the Odyssey expansion, and you play Horizons, you can buy the ship in-game.

If you DON'T own Odyssey you have to pay ARX to buy the ship in-game.

But with the way Frontier handle things, I honestly have no idea. I guess we'll find out on Aug 7th.

They have made it crystal clear in the announcement thread: 1.) You have Odyssey: You can buy the Python MK II on May 6th and it will become available for credits ingame on August 7th. 2.) You have Horizons 4.0 (Live): You can buy the Python MK II on May 6th and it will never become available for credits ingame, unless you upgrade to Odyssey. 3.) You have Horizons legacy: You get nothing, not on May 6th, not on August 7th.

I understand that Odyssey wasn't released on the old gen consoles. Anyone playing it on PC could easily see that it simply would not work. What I don't understand is why the game didn't come to the new current gen consoles. Those should be able to run it.

I think some of the confusion seems to be players are still thinking of Horizons as Legacy, when Horizons is available in both Legacy and Live on PC.

If you have Odyssey you are playing the Live game; Odyssey players will get access to the Python MkII on August 7th, but you can spend ARX to get early access in May.
If you have Horizons but not Odyssey, and are playing the Live game, then you will need to pay ARX* for the ship.
If you are playing Horizons Legacy on PC or Console, you wont be getting it all.

That's my understanding at least.

*which if you buy the ARX will cost you almost the same in real cash as buying Odyssey when it's on sale, which is no doubt one of the reasons for FDEV pricing it this way. Even if you don't want to do any of the on foot, assuming they follow suit with other variants, it would make sense to just buy and play Odyssey instead. This will at least help towards consolidating the playerbase into one game universe.

I think you got the bit I highlighted in red wrong.

If you don't own Odyssey, but play Horizons (not Legacy), you can pay ARX to unlock the ship in-game.
The confusion comes from Frontier's vague wording.

No, that is exactly what I wrote. Horizons 4.0 owners can unlock it for ARX starting on May 6th and ever after, but not get it for credits starting on Aug 7th.
So I understand you and don't misquote you (again)
Are you saying that Odyssey owners can buy the ship in-game with in-game credits, but non-Odyssey owners that play Horizon (ie not Legacy) can pay ARX to get the ship but NOT buy it in-game with in-game credits even after paying ARX for it?

Because if that is what you are saying, I think you're wrong.
It might turn out you're right, but I doubt it.

The issue was fdevs wording "non odyssey" that woke up the sleeping giant which are us consoles. Give it a week or so to get back to our slumber

IMO there is no issue here, simply because Legacy does not make any news. It's legacy, old code, never to be updated.

Basically, for legacy the only news you'd be expected to see are servers are UP or servers are Down - but it was said multiple times, no new features are ever expected to hit Legacy

Here is what is posted on the official site

Starting with the Python Mk II, we are pleased to announce that this will be available in game for Odyssey players on 7 August for credits at Shipyards across the galaxy.

However, if you cannot wait until then you can get 3-month early access to this ship on 7 May from the store for 16250 ARX.

Non-Odyssey owners will be able access ship variants from the store for ARX.

So, if you have Odyssey - you can get it for credits, ingame, since 7 August.
You can also get it for ARX, in the gamestore, starting with 7 May

However, for non-Odyssey players, that is Live 4.0 Players (the base game) - they can get it from gamestore starting with 7 May, but since they dont have Odyssey, they wont find the ship in the game shipyards for credits.

Yeah I know,
I jumped to conclusions with the non odyssey wording used by Fdev( rather than 4.0) . I just had a OMG moment. I nearly paid for arx .

Since nobody's asked, here's my interpretation:

May 7thAugust 7th and after
OdysseyUnlock with Arx, then buy ingame with creditsBuy ingame with credits
Horizons 4.0 (Live)NopeUnlock with Arx, then buy ingame with credits
Horizons 3.8 (Legacy)NopeNope

Well, they didnt mention any specific date for Live 4.0 Users, that's why i'm assuming they will be able to get it the moment it hit the stores (which only have a warning like "it requires Odyssey" but otherwise does not limit users from seeing/buying stuff in there )

There's also

which suggests that buying directly with ARX rather than credits will also be an option from May.

Well, it depends how it is:
  • spend arx as an unlock - which means one can get multiple ships in game or
  • buy each ship for arx - which means it wont be available in game for credits at shipyards until 7 August (for Odyssey players)

IMO it can go both ways

However, for non-Odyssey players, that is Live 4.0 Players (the base game) - they can get it from gamestore starting with 7 May, but since they dont have Odyssey, they wont find the ship in the game shipyards for credits.
I read that as unlocking the ability to buy the ship for in-game credits. NOT, pay ARX for exactly 1x Python mkII and only 1, if it gets destroyed, please spend more ARX for another one.

I read that as unlocking the ability to buy the ship for in-game credits.

I read it the same way - however, they could implement it as an one time per arx unlock.
But no, i dont really think they will do that if i look at how Cobra Mk4 was implemented - unlock once, have access to it forever.
