Horizon still alive

Maybe Horizon will die when FDEV fix this in Odyssey:
1. Combat bond lost when cmdr die: (even though credits don't mean much) The feeling of holding 1 billion bond and your hull drop to 30-20% and try to survive is lost in Odyssey, it makes combat cz shallow compare to Horizon.
2. Canopy break in Odyssey doesn't make sense, just turn on night vision and everything ok. When canopy break in Horizon , trying to use laser beam to guide gauss make AX combat more challenge and interesting, it's also less immersive when canopy break and get a whole caustic missile in the face without dying.

P.S Please keep the Goids coming, fighting bugs together is the most fun activity in this game. o7!

Horizons 4.0 is in a strange place. I like to joke that they should have called it "Odyssey Benchmark" to avoid confusion.
The people that prefer 4.0 are most likely already playing Odyssey, or will upgrade to it once they tested if they can run it.
The people that prefer 3.8 or those that can´t run the 4.0 codebase will inevitably stick to 3.8
Having a separate galaxy doesn´t help.
So no matter how you approach it, Horizons 4.0 is only a stepping stone. You start it once or twice and either move on to Odyssey or you move back to 3.8
Maybe this will change once the 4.0 exclusive content starts coming in, we´ll see.

Losing the reticle along with the canopy is not "interesting" gameplay in Horizons 3.8, it's just annoying and beyond stupid, given how extremely vulnerable canopies are. Actually it's one of the very few things that work better in Odyssey.

It would only change if players in Horizons 4.0 and Odyssey could finally instance together (in space).

Since Odyssey and Horizons 4.0 are the exact same software (same code, same game files) it makes zero sense that they can't.

Suppose it depends on whether you could split instancing as soon as content that had age rating issues showed up. It's OK from the point of view of horizons for you to gun me down in an SRV when I'm also in an SRV (PEGI 7 content) but there would be the age rating issue if I got out and you shot or ran me over then (PEGI 16 content).

There are 2 separate products in 2 separate folders:

\Products\elite-dangerous-64 -> this is Horizons 3.8 (PEGI 7 or something)

\Products\elite-dangerous-odyssey-64 -> this is Odyssey (PEGI 16)

"Horizons 4.0" is the latter. It's the same product as Odyssey, so its PEGI rating should be the same as well.

I can see Horizons 4.0 being a lonely place until the unique features start occurring in November. I still play 3.8 for some powerplay malarkey but I much prefer the new UI, now that I'm used to it.

At least CQC Odyssey and 4.0 players can kick each other's backsides. ;-)

But that's more effort than just stopping them instancing entirely, so it's unlikely to happen.
Client 4.0 already supports instance sharing between season 1 and Horizons. I doubt it would take much effort to include Odyssey. In fact I think it's more likely that instance sharing between all three seasons was the default until FDev came up with that "tech demo" idea and deliberately excluded Odyssey.

Sure. But selectively preventing instancing depending on whether they’re on a planet or not would probably require more development effort than just throwing 4.0 Odyssey and 4.0 non-Odyssey in a separate group.

Instance sharing between Odyssey, Horizons and Base Game never happened... and most probably will never happen (due to PEGI rating conflict)
it's also the reason Odyssey will never fold in the base game as it happened with Horizons

There's no PEGI issue in space. And if you can separate players at the edge of an exclusion zone already (as happens with Horizons and season 1 base game), you might as well separate Odyssey players from Horizons players there. The season 1 player hits the wall while the other two enter glide but in separate instances, one being PEGI 7 without pedestrian NPCs. I don't see any problem there, except that FDev doesn't want us to have that feature.

Big IF
And there is no separation/exclusion zone for non-atmospheric planets between Horizons and Odyssey players (like it was between Base and Horizons players)

Not at last, lets not forget a human can jump from surface, using a geyser and reach space... where the said human figure can be mauled by a Horizons player in a Ship
There is no hardline at exclusion zone level.

So... instancing between Odyssey and Horizons is an almost guaranteed "Never going to happen"

In base game mode landable planets do not exist. At all. They are replaced by the pre-Horizons billboard sprite planets. There is no instance separation at planets because base game players never had a planet in the first place.
