Horizon Trading - Let's talk

So, Horizons was announced and my uphoria hype has just about worn off. But that doesn't mean I'm not excited, I just want to get serious about knowing how this will work with our current game mechanisms.

ESPECIALLY TRADING

I really hope FD have thought of a way to implement trading into our little surface adventures. (Buy items at Bunker A, sell at bunker B)

Even though it was not mentioned, I still have hope for a trade rework in the core game. Why? Because our current method of trading is mind numbingly boring. It eats away at the very depths of one's soul. Yeah, it's that bad.
But unfortunately, it's the highest money maker.

Please FD, rework trading, or atleast make surface trading more fun (If it happens)

Trading is fine. If you find it mind numbingly boring play in open. Currently combat is the highest money maker FYI.

They're gonna be expanding the Missions in 1.4 which should be about 3 months before PL so you get some experience in long distance trading, because that's where the real money is. Neighbouring system profits are minimal, mostly.
There is an easy mode but you don't want that, right?

There was planet trading in Elite 20 years ago, and of course there will be trading in Elite when Horizons launch.

Trading is pretty much exactly the same as in the original, the sequel, and the sequel's sequel. With more commodities. More price fluctuations. More system types. So it's actually an improvement on previous Elites :)

Your trying to get a guy who thinks trading is dead boring excited by telling him he will soon be able to do more trading, just over longer distances. Does not compute! ;)

And much worse than years old games such as X3, which also looked to the original Elites as inspiration.

To each their own, I never got on with the X series because of the whole 'space as a limited number of boxes of connected sectors the size of shoeboxes' thing. I prefer Elite's abstract approach to trading, but bigger galaxy.

Coming from a 16 year x series veteran, I would take trading in ED over X anyday. What made X different was the fact that you could build & control factories. When I think back to it I can't believe I played that game for so long... 'One of your ships is under attack' Hear that damn voice every five seconds, ships were crap, flight controls where rubbish, you had to mod in your own cockpits..

Fast forward to ED - I have a fully customized HOTAS and pedal setup, am actually sitting inside these ships in VR with gorgeous graphics, giving commands to voice attack and controlling my media player via voice attack on long trade sessions, feeling every creak and groan through my BKgamer. Able to hunt profitable routes without using tools, Soon I'll finally able to take my heavy freighter down to surface starports whilst skimming mountain tops That is pure bliss to me.

Kind of confused here. You state that the current trading is boring, i.e. buying items at Station A and selling them at Station B. But you want to be able to trade on an airless rock, effectively buying items at Bunker A and selling them at Bunker B. I fail to see any difference except in one you are flying, the second you are driving. Sure the first few trade runs between bunkers will be different (can't see them being exciting) but after that you will be taking exactly the same route every time. Add in the fact that you will probably be the only one on this orbiting pebble and the ground vehicle doesn't look that big I think it would be kind of dumb for FD to invest time and resources into trading at this stage.

Yeah. The worst thing about X3 was how artificial everything felt, espcially those creepy video feeds of NPCs staring at you. But it did have that sense of an ebb and flow, of things moving logically from place to place, an economy which had inputs and outputs and which were affected by various influences. I don't know... it's been years since I played those games. Maybe I'm remembering through rose tinted glasses somewhat.

I like the solidness of an approach like apparently Eve has, where every ship requires resources to build. I think that's why I have trouble sinking my teeth into ED mostly, because nothing feels of consequence. Warring factions can never run out of resources and leave themselves vunerable. If all the miners put their mining lasers down tomorrow nothing would really change. As 777Driver says, you then rely on the more visceral experience of trading, which I could and have gotten into but feel I've exhausted that experience a bit, and I haven't done much of it (unless I'm a lousy tracker of my own playtime, I'm no 100+ hours player).
