Horizon Zero Dawn

Anyone played this?

To me this came as an absolute surprise. I thought it will be a bland Ubisoftish openworld game with nonsensical robo-dinosaurs in a post-apocalyptic stone age story. Man, was i wrong! This game is brilliant. One of the best thought through SF storylines in any game i played. Excellent world-building, lovely many character, great enemy design and combat gameplay. Seriously, it is the first game where i desperately try to find more in-game lore texts, just to learn more about the world. I even do all the open world "collectible" stuff, which i normally never do, just because it is so well tied into the whole world and makes sense. Sure, there are things to criticize, but the strengths by far outweighs the weaknesses. If you own a PS4, i would say this is a must buy & must play immediately. What a surprise!

It certainly looks interesting.

The last open world game I bought for my PS4 was Far Cry Primal and I got bored of that very quickly, so I'm a tad wary of buying another one.

How does it compare?

I got bored of Far Cry Primal after 2 hours and couldn't stop playing Horizon Zero Dawn until i finished it. Took me 60 hours in about ten days. I have to say that i am fed up with open world mechanics and rarely finish games, in that regard Horizons left quite the impression.

Looks stunning but only on the PS4, not sure I can justify buying a PS4 for one game but it looks very well made.

I would say one can easily justify buying a ps4 (slim) for the exclusives. Zero dawn and Last of Us alone are worth it. Bloodbore is brilliant if you like this kind of gameplay. Uncharted 4 is great, too.

I agree. The Last of Us, The Last Guardian, Journey, and now Horizon Zero Dawn, it really is a great time to get a used PS4!

TBH I could probably justify it given how much I've spent on VR, it's just I got a PS 3 and rarely use it. I still find the controllers for Playstations and Xboxes difficult to adjust to because I'm so used to the wealth of controller options for a PC. Although I see you can now connect up a keyboard and mouse to a PS4 via a PC. I'll look into it.

You can connect keyboard and mouse since the good old PS2 days. Most game developers just decide to not support it and loudly complain if people use workarounds (like XIM4).

Thanks for the info although that seems crazy from a development point of view. A bit like I believe you can attach a HOTAS to an XBone but there is no native support. I mean sure I get that from a development point of view having an identical hardware spec to develop for is easier but adding a custom controller page is little more than a couple of weeks work at most.

OP - sorry for going OT - it really does look a stunning game. :)

Xbox only accepts Microsoft-licensed peripherals with a DRM chip inside them. Manufacturers pay a premium for that on third-party peripherals. PlayStation supports any peripheral (popular example: various steering wheel models) as long as game developers add support for them. While most decide to not support keyboard and mouse, the OS itself still works fine with it.

Theoretically something like Elite Dangerous PS4 could support keyboard, mouse and any HOTAS on the market.

Think i'll check it out when it hits the bargain bucket. Looks interesting though and pretty decent graphics by all accounts.

Absolutely great game, got the platinum trophy simply by playing it, it's easily the best open world game I've played, story was excellent and the graphics can be simply stunning at times.

Necro bump to stop me hijacking the thread on the PS5 and Bethesda.

This is great on PC, yes I know it's a geological era since it released but it's worth a bump here. I thought this would be open world ala ubisoft with minimal character, charm or story. It isnt. Its actually a very charming game that looks amazing on my PC and has a story I give a shizzle about.

Might be a nice one to grab for you guys if you find yourself in a slump playing other things.

Once again this forum proves itself amazing for its community information, theres no way I'd have tried this without some conversation with you guys.

I thought it was strange that when HZD was ported over to PC, it went by with barely a notice. Back in 2017 when it was released on the PS, I merely noted it as another game I would probably never play, locked behind the Sony exclusivity wall like many others.

I've no idea if releasing the game for PC was due to Guerrilla games being freed from the clutches of Sony that allowed them to do so or perhaps it was Sony attempting to approach the exclusivity thing a little less severely...whatever it was, I'm certainly glad it happened. HZD has been a breath of fresh air, a joy to play and included itself in my play through every few months list...like the Witcher 3...and yup, it's definitely up there in the same league, arguably better in quite a few respects too :)

April the 19th it will be FREE for all PlayStation owners...
So yes if you avoided paying for it for all this time on PSN youll be able to play this title for FREE... on PlayStations due to

I've heard a lot of praise for it. Mostly from wimmens.

It's a great game so far. First time I have felt myself giving a about a story or characters since probably Witcher 3. If it maintains the quality throughout this could finally top Witcher 3 for me for story and immersion.
