Horizon Zero Dawn

It's a great game so far. First time I have felt myself giving a poopoo about a story or characters since probably Witcher 3. If it maintains the quality throughout this could finally top Witcher 3 for me for story and immersion.
I don't think it misses a beat throughout the entire game...if anything, it intensifies the further you progress through the story...It's one of those stories that I actively wanted to know more and scanned every mobile phone and watched every hologram message I came across trying to piece parts of it together. It really kept me engrossed throughout...Once you tie some of the side missions in with the main quest story line, it all adds up to a stunning piece of creative writing.

I tried guessing the main plot and what had happened all the way through as the story unfolded chapter by chapter...I was completely wrong :D

Rost's story as told to Aloy...when and if you even unveil it...since it involves being so immersed that you ask the right question at the right time and from the right person... even managed to bring tears to my eyes :)

I mean, the story is excellent as @Mole HD says, and the gameplay is also quite engaging, but it is hard to top W3 story telling imo.

I must also clarify I may be a bit biased because I am currently finishing W3 😋 , that I neglected when it released just because I thought the crafting system was too convoluted... Silly me. I am seriously impressed by all the available possible story lines and the depth of some secondary quests. It is not just the narrative aspect but the fact that CDPR must have had to manage to weave them all into a coherent plot. I can imagine the flow chart diagram for these must have been a nightmare! Stories like the one of the Baron and his unborn child, the 3 witches or the Novigrad mage hunting related side quests, etc are seriously impressive.

You are bang on there about W3, they managed to tie great storytelling perfectly with setting and atmosphere. It's a bit of a shame that CP2077 doesn't do it near as well I feel.

I must agree Dan. Maybe its improved since release but at the core this game feels and plays inferior to W3, it does feel as though another team developed it and the team werent given the memo about how good W3 was.
It's a good game and I will definitely go back and reinstall it at some point. Not sure when though.

I just wonder if the sort of people who were really great at designing individual missions or polishing game systems on Witcher 3 got their salaries doubled and put in charge of whole teams. And they weren't very good at being in charge of whole teams. And spent all their time in meetings or down the golf course when previously they'd been very hands on making things work.

Something changed in the structure of how they went about things.

Still really enjoying this little gem of a game. I do have some criticism though

1. Maybe I'm doing it wrong but the fire damage on blaze canisters seems hit or miss to me, I'll often aim for them with fire arrows and get the hit but no effect. Is this just me.

2. It's a real shame they went the lazy way to putting collectables on the map and revealing them all instantly even in areas you've technically never even heard of let alone visited before, all this by just using a map you can buy off any scrub merchant, its lazy and a missed opportunity.
What would have been really nice is maybe unlocking the ability to tune into the items using your focus device while exploring.

Other than those things I love it a lot the balance in the mechanics and gameplay is very good.

just a reminder its free, No PS+, no PS now, PS5 or PS4 required but it is free...

HZD is such a fun game! I think sony is also pushing the game and make it accessible by releasing the free game in preparations for the sequel like how they did with Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart.

I do hope this also means that the game will get a 60fps boost for PS5 like R&C did after that game was handed out for free, that would make me excited to replay it again on the new system before Horizon Forbidden West comes out.
