Horizons Avatar: How Hard Would It Be To Scan Our Face?

I suspect a great many number of Elite pilots are going to try and recreate their own images for their Elite Avatar (I know I will), and I'm sure we'll have our share of Malcolm Reynolds, Han Solos, Catherine Janeways, and Dave Listers out there too.

But any time I play a game allowing you to customize a face I find it's exceedingly difficult to get things right, even if I got a picture right in front of me.

Is there some way to make it so you could use a front facing image and a profile image in order to get some approximate settings you could then tweak?

If it can't be done in-game, could it be possible for a third party off site to do something like that? Kind of like how some created ways to change your HUD look on a website, then copy the code to get those settings?

Anybody else want something like this? Anyone got any ideas how it could be done?

But...but you can't scan the mask properly. I thought mossfoot was so ugly he frightened children and had to wear a lucha libre mask to get around?

EA Sports have a face scanning app so that you can put yourself in the game. They could run a similar setup to that I suppose.

Would love this. Lacking that, though, an ongoing ability to edit/tweak one's character would also work, as we would get the opportunity to get closer and closer as we go to what we want...

As do 2K Sports, which if I recall I executed with the Playstation camera for a PS4; that would be even easier than taking two pics and uploading them.

Considering the results scanning has had with xbox 360/one kinect, well lets just say it didn't work so well and that's with depth camera in addition to normal camera, and given varying quality of people's different web cams, I cannot think it would work out well.
However if the faces support detailed sculpting tools similar to fallout 4 and eve online for that matter, you can recreate yourself very effectively.

Just hope people don't fly around with their avatar's face glitched out like in NBA 2K15:

I'd prefer a face/character editor like they are used in most RPGs now over an unreliable feature to scan my face. There have been quite some games that took a photo of the player's face and used that, and it never looked good. Character editors however allow more control.

No reason you can't have both. Chances are you'd want to fine tune anything the scanner did anyway

THARGOIDS CONFIRMED!!!

LOL. People are going to put an object at their face or their hand in front of their face while it's scanning. Wonder how it turns out. Probably just put your thumb on the lens, and you're face is a big square plate

Cool idea!

Not my sort of thing personally, I always choose to go something other than myself in games, generally completely different to my own look.

I can see numerous pilots asking for it to be nerfed because as soon as they see my handsome face in the cockpit canopy they'd be extremely jealous and have an uncontrollable urge to fly into the nearest star.

This is a very complicated project.

It would be a much more efficient use of time for FD to, you know, actually work on CONTENT. which we SORELY need more of.
