Horizons Choice

I play primarily Exploration. I would play Odyssey (and I have paid for the game) if it had the same menu interface as Horizons. I have tried to adapt to Odyssey's menu interface many times. It's unfortunate that Dev didn't keep the same menu format from Horizons because I now own a game that I won't play. Too bad, really, because I was looking forward to first footfall. Change my mind.

I prefer the Odyssey interface for many of the advantages it brings, there are some things missing that were available in the Horizons interface but on the whole the benefits outweigh the negatives. What exactly about the Odyssey is so much of a problem for you?

I prefer the Horizons maps to Odyssey- for explorers it's simpler to use but I did get used to the maps in Odyssey, some of the basic information missing when checking on system map can be found with one click and once muscle memory sets in it wasn't so much of a problem.

But the one thing I hate with Odyssey system maps is the wide blue atmosphere enveloping around non-landable planets. The Horizons clear map where you could instantly check out ELWs, WWs and the others is now a mess where regular squinting is needed to find the planets details and is totally unnecessary addition to the game.

I don't find the atmosphere rings an issue at all, granted we don't all have the same eyesight, but mines not particularly good. The main thing I miss about the Horizons map is the lack of rollover popup where you could add and remove bookmarks, so handy! But to go back and no longer be able to grab the system name from the galmap? Never. Sure in H I could alt/tab and grab the system name from EDDiscovery because it showed the system name of the current system, but the O galmap allows me to just grab the system name from any highlighted system, losing that would simply be unacceptable!

To be fair in ody maps I see only 1 advantage.

Searching certain systems is much easier. You can type first few letters, and it will show you possible obiects. You can even copy obiect name.
Other details are similar, but looks different, or are even worse. Example in hzn certain map filter is like "take list, and pick what you want", in ody it is "pick category, pick subcategory, finally you can pick your filter, oh, btw, if you move cursor on another filter you will change it".

Maybe I'm so used to the Horizons maps giving me the ability to hover over the planet types and immediately see what's terraformable or not, details of the planet (like Gs, minerals, # of geological or biological features, etc.).

There were many other things that bothered me but it's been too long since I gave O a final shot that I'm pretty dim on them now. Manueverability throughout the planet discovery menus was challenging, to say the least.

The one thing that became glaringly apparent was an incident that happened in deep space that really turned me off. I was exploring in H and came across a planet with biological and geological features and thought "I wonder what these features would look like in O...I wonder what it would look like to walk up to them...". I was still in orbit of the planet in question so I exited H and opened up O to make the planetary landing. I was surprised to find that not only were ALL of the features gone; the planet was no longer even landable. Maybe I expected too much, but I was really disappointed that the same system I discovered in H didn't exist in O.

I just feel that the menu interface in H wasn't broken and I can't believe that it wasn't portable from H to O.

I'm doing some exploration near Sag. Maybe I'll head over to the Colonia area and reset to O before going exploring again to see if I can't figure out it's menus. I really am impressed with its visuals and would love to be getting some first footfalls all over the place. I guess the new menus were just overwhelming and they slowed my exploration miserably. Not that I'm in a hurry, but I do like to get into and out of a system quickly...unless I'm really intrigued by something, anyway.

I would suggest, if you are on PC, to use Observatory, which will track and notify you of objects of interest, and MattG's plugins, don't forget those, peering at the system map to find interesting planets is old hat now.
