I've read today the upcoming Horizons features and I am very happy.
Altough for now we have few details and are far to know what it will really be, in my opinion planetary landing is a great improvement for the game, and can add a lot expecially to explorations.
My hope now is that instead implementing another level of seamless grinding we will have gameplay features and choices.
Making one ship able to travel fast to the other side of the galaxy and land everywhere without risks to get the "First Landed" tag is a NO NO.
Stubbornly drive every other planet to find bases that gives you a tag an some credits without risks is another NO NO.
And buggy wars a la Mad Max is another NO NO.
We should have specialized ships, or at least speacilized fittings. Ships that can do planetary landings or undock shuttels/buggies shouldn't be able to jump 30+Ly and scan a system in a click. We should make hard choices, possibly organize in Wings, etc. And to a certain degree REALISM < GAMEPLAY so i don't care if it would be technically possible in a fictional world.
We can't go back, they gave us the ability to travel the entire galaxy without risks and without much content, now we can't retrotech to make exploration more interesting.
So if it is difficult, requires hard choices, has interesting outcomes and EXPECIALLY FUN AND INTERESTING GAME MECHANICS, planetary landing is the chance to make exploration meaningfull.
Regarding this I'm happy they will do it little by little, starting with rocks we all have shunned to this day. At least it doesn't seem "go everywhere, land everywhere, drive everywhere with one ship" approach.
The buggy in the movie seems too sporty to me, let's try to implement difficult mechanics that make finding a base on a planet a lenghty process that requires skills and give a sense of accomplishment.
Nevertheless Horizons is really good news for me, and i think for the other many players, that were struggling in going on playing the game, and have lamented boredom over the forums in the past weeks.
