Horizons has improvements to exploration!!!!

It may not be direct improvements but the new crafting system is going to give us explorers some very nice new tools to use and some interactive exploration ways to go about getting them:

There will be six syntheses that can be applied – three for the ship including re-supply ammunition, restocking of the AFM and a temporary increase in jump range for the FSD. For the SRV the benefits include fuel for the SRV, repair and ammunition for the plasma repeaters. Higher quality materials can confer improvements, so refilling ammunition using a high quality mix of materials can increase the damage caused by the ammunition as these have better materials than store bought ammunition.

So for explorers, not only will we be able to replenish our AFM's out in deep space, but we will also be able to make and use items that temporarily increase FSD range! That would not only allow us to span gaps and travel faster but to also reach currently unreachable stars! And the part I honestly really like is that we will be required to use the SRV to explore planetary surfaces in order to obtain the materials to craft these items. We are not only getting two really new nice tools but also being given some very nice reasons to fly down and explore surfaces too.

All of that sounds freakin awesome to me as an explorer.

Excellent news indeed!!! Just hope that the increased FSD is not like +5ly, It better be +20ly and more than ONE jump, but like 10. Otherwise, and as often has happened, they nerf the feature to a point is not worth it any more and to go down on a planet and spend 1 hour to look for a pound of material that will increase you +5ly in one jump only....

So, yes, excited... but will believe it when I see it..

This is exciting stuff! Actually digging for things and exploring things!

Those airless rocks I scanned way back then will not go in vain! :D

Ooh, mining dilithium crystals and overclocking the FSD. Sounds like a great new way for people to get stuck places. I hope it has some interesting and lethal failure-modes; otherwise it's just candy-covered powerups.
Hahaha, turn on your rep so I can give you some, you weasel.

My concern isn't about what new things i can do as an Explorer but how much pewpew Im gonna have to do to get to what i want & then get out.

FDs track record on how they treat the Explorers is all that good. Once the pewpew kiddies start moaning how easy it is to be on the surface without any challenge, then the FD Devs will just ramp up the pewpew, so the kiddies are happy, but everyone else suffers.

I use the Interdiction 'minigame' to prove my point.

If Im in solo mode & Im 10000LYs from the bubble, roaming around a Metal Rich planet for resources & deposits, I don't expect to encounter ANYONE - EVER!....but i bet that won't happen & I'll be hounded by psycho NPCs that appear from thin air (pardon the pun).

I hope not, but have little faith in FD these days.

i dont expect much from jump booster. it probably wont give you tenths of ly range, and FSD overload will probably damage your ship. and as kancro vantas mentioned, you will have to spent time looking for proper materials, mine them and craft the jump booster. is it worth the effort?

To get somewhere faster, no it's not. I suspect it'd take you longer to assemble the materials required than the time you'd save with longer jump(s). But for reaching otherwise unreachable systems? Yes it's worth it, if you are an explorer wishing to reach those out of reach places.

Small review of yesterday's developers update regarding raw materials exploration:
You will know in ship that there is something special on planet. You need to land nearby and deploy SRV.
In SRV you will have wave scanner, which will determine what have you found.
Raw material wont take your cargohold, im not sure it the material will be lost in case of ship destruction.
Synthetised materials will not be "tradeable", so fuel rats wont save you if you strand on normally unreachable system after boosted jump.
Actually these materials can be used for re-supply ammunition, restocking of the AFM and boosted fuel.
In future you will be able to craft improved modules and weapons

So for explorers, not only will we be able to replenish our AFM's out in deep space.

This would be a lot more exciting if the AFM could repair the cockpit, or even if I had ever run out of AFM ammunition. In a 5 month exploration trip I didn't even get through half of my AFM ammo.

The jump range boost has some interesting possibilities.

This is the main reason to have an FSD range boost.

A good secondary reason for an FSD range boost, but this depends entirely upon execution, would be to carry around the materials for an emergency so if you accidentally get low on fuel you can use it to extend the range of your remaining fuel and make it more likely that you can jump to a scoopable star.

I have to assume that planetary outposts and drones and such will be just like pirate ships are now, once you get a thousand light years or so out from the bubble you won't see anyone. I hope that's how it's going to be.

This would be a lot more exciting if the AFM could repair the cockpit,

Michael Brooks said that the AFM's fixing canopy's is coming, but not for 2.0 launch.

Living up to your reputation, SB ;)

I agree, btw. Let's hope for a candiless implementation.
