Horizons: What is different between right now and pre-horizons?

Greetings Commanders!

I haven't logged in to ED in many many months. I still haven't got around to buying Horizons and I just wanted to ask this question:

What will I do differently gameplay-wise if I were to purchase Horizons?

I played ED for many minths starting with the steam release, but quit a few minths before Horizons was released. Last I checked, the main feature in Horizons was planetary landing on worlds without atmospheres. So how has that affected what you do in game and has anything else significant been changed since pre-horizon days?

Well, after the novelty of landing on airless rocks and driving your SRV at breakneck speed collecting materials for synthesis wears off, post-horizons doesn't differ all that much from pre-horizons... yet. 2.0 (planetary landings) is basically a foundation on which much of the rest of the season builds. Next patch for example will introduce engineers who can buff the modules of your ship for a price. And those engineers are all on planet surfaces.

So maybe I should wait for the next patch? I did read about that in their email this week and that prompted me to come and ask what has changed, but it sounds like there haven't been many major changes since the release of 2.0.

Then come transport missions, multi-crew, ship launched fighters, etc, etc. Horizons is basically a season pass in disguise. It lays a foundation to create a year long expansion of the game.

The next patch will also completely re-vamp the mission system. It even adds personal quest givers with their own little avatars and rep. Neato. That part will be free to everyone. It's a base game update. I'd say wait until June for 2.1. Or play now to get enough money to be able to buy stuff in the engineers update.

We're not Post-Horizons would be my answer, we've got the first part which is insanely better planetary models and landing on airless worlds and now that's about to be expanded upon with 2.1. It's not all there yet obviously, it's 1/5th of the way there, and this upsets some people who Just Can't Understand - but there's a lot of fun to be had with the new options too it's just not as wideranging as it will be in the future.

So you can wait and wait to get it all at once or you can have some of the fun now basically. The terrain systems are fantastic, if you're taking the time to go look there's all sorts of canyons and features and interest but it's lifeless atmosphereless bodies so don't get overexcited about the possibilities.

Just wait 10 years then it will all be in ED 10.0 :D

Landing on planets is a great way to break up other activities.

In the process I get damage boosters for my multi cannons; I save those up for pvp encounters.
The FSD boosters have saved me from running out of fuel a number of times.

The planet side missions are often glitched at the moment, but once 2.1 drops, that should hopefully be ironed out, and the planetary missions a nice addition... Planetary assaults can be a fun diversion to break things up a bit currently.

Last week I ran into a group of CMDR pirates over a planet surface & had a blast fighting planets side. That's something FD have stated there will be more of after 2.1 drops as well; at least with NPC encounters on planets increasing.

To be honest I didn't have huge expectations for the original Horizons release. That's why I haven't bought it yet. I think I will wait for the next major patch before making my return. I have around 100m in the bank if I remember correctly. Is that still considered a decent amount of change?

Disguise?

The "disquise" is quite frankly terrible!!!! :D

None that matters really, I appreciate sound and graphics improvement but the gameplay remains the same ol' grind.
Planetary landing was added and its completly useless, you will drive SRV looking for materials for hours and get enough for maybe few weapon reloads, or find few canisters of gold. Most people probably avoided Horizons, (just look up steam reviews) so they came up with Engineers idea that gives advantage in combat to Horizons owners and instead balancing weapons they will generate them randomly now, their ideas include game breaking weapons too so I can't wait for Engineers, It's gonna be as marvellous as PowerPlay.

Did Frontier effectively get the 1000 or so reviews on this removed? (When they've changed naming from expansion to Season pass) I did a pretty extensive one on this and I'd like to keep it...

Still; good on them for calling it what it is. A season pass. Or, more accurately, a season pass of unknown quality with a really bad appetizer. Barren worlds whose novelty of visiting wears off within an hour.

Save your money. Frontier already has a $100 million market cap and yet to provide the motivation and tools that could make ED a great game. A couple of reviews covering the last year of updates and their issues which highlight most of the frustrations people tend to have with the game:

I have horizons and have only ever gone down to a planet once in a Cobra MkIII, when down there I finally find out that the base isnt dockable and that its illegal to go down there something that isnt notified anywhere apart from a youtube video or something. This put me off quite a bit and ive been flying around space ever since.

On the whole its the half-assedness of it all surely there could be a little icon somewhere on the hud stating somewhere is illegal to visit so we dont have to resort to watching a youtube video to see how to play something that should be in the game. Maybe when I get my new laptop soon I will try once again to land down there but at present I just cant be       also the massive frame drops people have been experiencing between space and surface doesnt inspire people either. I dont want to fly down silky smooth to be hit with a slideshow when i get down there.

It tells you about whether there are docking facilities and the security status on the system map.

I tried to go on holiday once, but when I arrived that place had no parking so I don't go on holiday anymore.

The 2.1 update apparently has vastly improved planet rendering - enough so that the frame rate is ok on an xbox one - and with the right settings I landed and played around just fine on a fanless 750Ti.

What card do you have?
