hostage rescue mission - how do they work?

I had one hostage rescue mission. The mission told me the name of the ship/pilot and that I had to rescue 2 persons.

I found the ship/pilot - a clean sidewinder. No "mission target" indication. I interdicted the ship, managed not to blow the sidewinder up and got 3 t of cargo (worth over 220k cr.), but not the hostages.
After that I noticed that the mission no longer showed up in the transaction tab.

What happened?
What did I wrong?
 
I believe they are broken, but in theory you go to the System. Locate the SHIP carrying the hostage and interdict them or wait for them to low-wake into local space and follow. Then try one of two strategies

1) Target their HATCH in sub-systems and hope the cryo-pod carrying the hostage falls out so you can scoop it up.
2) Target their Power Plant and reduce it to 0% so they come to a dead stop and hopefully don't blowup. Use Hatch Breaker Limpets to remove the Cryo-pod carrying the hostage and be on your merry way.

It is possible to complete a hostage/political prisoner rescue mission. It depends on one thing that is not guaranteed.

Receiving one of those "I have something important to discuss with you" messengers, who wants you to deliver hostages/political prisoners to an alternate destination.

In the alternate destination, it doesn't specify "mission specific", and the hostages/prisoners you get from the target npc can be used to complete the mission.

Also, exiting/re-entering supercruise may reset the NPC, including ship type and wanted status. You have to use a hatch-breaker limpet to make them drop the hostages/prisoners.


Otherwise, the missions don't work.
 
Thanks all for the answers. I searched the forum, but hadn't found anything related to the hostage missions - just that the surface rescue missions are broken.

What made me completely confused that the mission simply disappeared - not marked as failed or abandoned.

Hatch breaker limpets certainly will be equipped if I ever try one of those hostage missions again.

I haven't tried any hostage missions since just after 1.5 came out.

Are they still broken?

Or/And is it true that you have to hatch break the NPC for the correct cargo?

(Which is good cos I just outfitted my Python for it!)
