Newcomer / Intro Hostile faction cops?

I have noticed if you are in a system controlled by a faction you are hostile with, if you have been killing their ships in a CZ for example, the cops show as red. What happens if the cops turn up cos you have been pulled from SC by a pirate? Do they attack you as well? Flying a clean ship that is, not talking about the situation if you are wanted. The reason I ask is I tend to fly armed trading ships and like to give NPC pirates a kicking. That wouldn’t be wise if the cops attack you as well. In a high sec system, with a pirate Anaconda they are going to arrive before you have finished the kill.

If you are hostile all their ships security or civilian will attack if they notice. If its a civilian and they fire first, then they become wanted and you can return fire, but the cops will still arrive cos a crime has been committed (by them)
In an interdiction, I guess it depends on who they scan first.

If you dont want the cops to turn up, then turn off "Report Crimes" in your ship options. As long as you dont fire first, you will be fine.

Thanks for the info. Looks like Rep rebuilding time. So if a non cop NPC attacks you first they get a bounty and presumably the cops would kill them. If the cops attack you first presumably they don’t get a bounty And don’t shoot each other!

If you want to rebuild your rep with the ruling faction, it can be tricky. If their hostile, they will attack on sight and if you fight back it will further decrease your rep.

The easiest way to do it is
1) let the system be for a couple of days (or weeks, depending how bad it is). Your rep will slowly start raising back to 0 in a similar manner as it would deteriorate back to 0 from the friendly side of the progress bar. Once it has left the "hostile" level, you can return and do stuff for them again without a risk of sparking another conflict.
2) If you have exploration data, go ahead and dump a couple million worth at their station. That will repair your rep instantly.
The problem is that they probably won't even let you dock at fist, so you'll have to wait to loose the "hostile" status either way.

Bounty hunt in a HazRES or CNB in a system run by the faction.

Drop the bounties at an interstellar factor. You won't affect their influence, but it will rebuild your reputation.

Question (my time to be a newb):
Can wanted ships in HazRES belong to ruling faction? (I bet they can) And if so, will a bounty rep-boost offset the rep hit one gets for killing them? (Not sure it's worth it)
Because even in HazRES, a clash with hostile faction's ships is going to be inevitable, although they will not be the system authority.

Thanks for the advice. I guess it is probably easier when doing CZ’s to intersperse with some rep rebuilding. Yes wanted ships can belong to the ruling faction and they turn up in HazRes and you see them in SC while flying round the system.

Rep recovered from a bounty is more than the rep lost for killing a proper criminal. A Hostile civilian will only have a very small bounty, so quite possibly not. Not something I have tested, but I wouldn't recommend it as a tactic.

Pretty much what Dommarraa said. My understanding is that any rep lost for killing a faction ship is very small - they are wanted after all - and the rep boost is proportional to the bounty cashed.
