Hostile status with the Federation .. I don't know how I got it or how to louse it, HELP.

It makes me so mad I'm thinking of leaving if I can't recover from it.

Why is there nouthing on how reputation works in the manual.

In my opinion the greatest improvement that could be made to the game would be to STOP improving it for 24 hours and set the games designers the task of writing the manual so new players could understand the game.

I found myself hostile with Federation as well, overnight.
Turns out I was trading, got interdicted by NPC, killed him (Cobra, isn't she nice?) and he dropped some cargo.
I had space in my hold so scooped it up and returned to flying the trade runs. Yeah, I know you see it coming - I got scanned on my approach to a station and had bounty on my head for smuggling.
I decided to ignore it and deal with it the next day and did so - payed the bounty next day. It was enough time to ruin my reputation with them, though. Each bloody ton of that stuff punches rep like a train. I'm still unfriendly with Federation but did some missions for some of their smaller factions and at least they don't shoot me on sight now. But I don't feel welcome when docking permission is granted with "Do your business and be gone, outsider" confirmation

Rep system is a little unbalanced atm.

I am pretty much hostile with feds all the time. But to get it improved for you I would suggest to start doing missions for them, dock only at fed outposts (npcs will not open fire on you here) - this is the slow way.
For getting your rep up faster hit a nearby independent or anarchy system and start bounty hunting. Once you have around 150-200k bounties for fed space cash them in. This should move you from hostile to unfriendly. Oh and dont forget you need KWS for this.

the Feds seem awfully touchy compared to everyone else. I've done soooo many missions for feds (from bounty hunting to deliveries) and avoided anything against them, or even attacking wanted ships that are from a fed-allied faction. I've gotten friendly and allied with loads of indpendent factions but just can't shift the fed rep up from "unfriendly"

I actually suspect there are some bugs - i turned in a bunch of bounties to the feds and it lowered my rep at one point.
