Hardware & Technical HOTAS Flight X or T16000M

This has been posted several times already I'm sure

but I'm just looking for someone to give me that last straw - whether to go for the Hotas or T16000M (and maybe later get a CH Pro Throttle if necessary?)

Whoever has owned both, what would you recommend?

I know that the T16000M has acute precision whereas the Flight X does not very much, although generally does the job.

I was thinking of going for the Flight X but this post worried me a bit

Just to let you know the joystick of the T. Flight Hotas started malfunctioning yesterday, after one month of almost daily use (1 - 2 hours/day). When I pull back the stick completely (to pitch) just when reaching the end, you can feel a little resistance and then pop it reverses the input signal completely 180, meaning instead of pulling up you start nosediving. I re-calibrated the stick using Thrustmasters calibration tool but to no effect. Now for the price I did not expect this thing to last long but one month is slightly disappointing. For now I am using the Throttle of the T. Flight together with my T.16000M until I find the money to buy myself a decent high dollar Hotas.

Now I sort of have money but don't want to spend that much too, Saitek products I don't want to get because of the price and, as much as I've heard or read they're not the best.

I find the T16000M much more responsive and precise. Because of the build in 3D (Hall Effect) magnetic sensors which produce precision levels 256 times greater than the T. Flight Hotas. Best of all there is no dead-zone whatsoever on the T16000M a big improvement over the T. Flight Hotas stick. As a bonus I can keep using the T. Flight Hotas throttle. The combination of the two is the best of both for me right now, until i have the money to buy a high end Hotas.

Edit 1: The only disadvantage I find is the fact the T16000M is much stiffer and puts a lot more strain on your wrist. I guess I will be using the stick that came with the T. Flight Hotas for trading missions and exploring and only when under attack or having to evade interdiction I will grab the T16000M, which I have sitting directly next to it.

Edit 2: Interesting development this morning. I found out that if I only set the yaw, roll and pitch axes of the T. Flight Hotas and not bind the yaw, roll and pitch left and right individually the T. Flight Hotas stick was much more responsive, almost as responsive as the T16000M. This way I got rid of most of the horrible dead-zone it had before. The T16000M is still a bit more accurate but at the cost of a stiffer stick, which I do not prefer.

I will keep both for the moment and see over time which one I actually prefer, but at the moment it seems I will do fine with the T. Flight Hotas X.

If the Flight X can be modified somehow as seen in "Edit 2", then it ain't that bad I guess? But seeing it failed for him after a month it kinda makes me wary.. wonder how well it's working for the others, maybe it's just a one case scenario. And incase it happens it can be swapped out too ofc.

I don't have the game yet but I want to start playing when I get a joystick, I just want to make the right decision in getting one. Lots of people seem to like the Flight X for it's practicality for first time users but the enhanced precision on the T16000M is what holds me back.

I remember when I had a Microsoft Sidewinder back in the old days to play SW Rogue Squadron, damn were those the days! :D

What would the others say?

Thanks!

I expect you've not had any responses yet because few people will have both, if you start with a t16000m you're unlikely to want to "upgrade" to a less accurate stick IMO, and if you start with a HOTAS you're not likely to want to "upgrade" to a non-HOTAS. Personally I followed the same path you suggested above (t16000m to start, added a CH Pro Throttle later) and find it a really good combo. I don't find the t16000m to be overly stiff, maybe it was at first but it's fine now ... probably a combination of getting used to it, and it loosening somewhat over the time I've been using it (since alpha)

Thanks for the replies guys. Definitely going for the T16000M, already pulled the trigger. :) Should arrive sometime 15-20 April, can't wait.. :D

Start saving for the CH Pro throttle. You'll need it! The T16000 is an awesomely accurate stick, with horrid button layout - it needs a CH Pro to shine.

Alright bro.. I'll do that. :) Any idea where I could get one though, as they always seem to be out of stock or not available in amazon? My location is Estonia.

Thanks

You just have to keep looking, I'm sure stocks will recover eventually, maybe the influx of Steam users has temporarily dried it up :)

I was lucky and found stock on Amazon US, so imported one to the UK. Even if I'd found one locally, the US price was lower and Amazon has a customs pre-payment scheme so no import charge surprises. I'm not sure if that works in Estonia though, but it makes importing much less hassle/costly if it's available.
