Newcomer / Intro HOTAS or M/KB?

A friend has an x54, and it's the same there. Just can't get comfy, even with multiple hats on the left and right hands (yippee) it's never enough, or my motor skills just aren't happy.
Nothing is right.

Is that an X55 with a couple of broken buttons? :)

Well, the CH fighterstick is in the mail, and I couldn't help myself since amazon.Co.uk had a singular ch pro throttle in stock, I ordered that as well (the bank gave me a credit card for a reason..)

The stick should arrive within the week, the throttle could be as much as three weeks out :(
Can't wait but just the stick should be great upgrade from M&K.

VR is going to have to wait, but I'm definitely intending to give the diy headtracker a go.

Now with Hotas, 'm all over the place, without the WASD keys doing the manouvering, I don't have enough controll on just the throttling forwards and backwards.

I've even flipped the yaw and rotation on the twisty joystick part (even though ED is designed expressly for roll, not yaw) and going all wing-commander.
Ditched the natural hat controlls for "power" (or even the looking) to doing the lateral thrusts.

But i just can't get comfy in anything. There is always one axis that just isn't "right".

Here's what I did when I was still using the T.Flight: I put the left/right thrust on the “rocker“ at the throttle and up/down thrust on button 5 and 7, throttle thump controlled. (Can't link my chart, tablet right now, sorry.) It helped a lot having all thrust vectors on one hand and all axis..es.. on the other.

Everything else can be mapped to the single hat with shift buttons (UI panels, power distribution, target/fire group selection.)

Amazing, enjoy :)

Wow guys just wanna say thanks for all the replies!!
A whole wealth of great info here which I'm sure will help a lot of players in a similar position.

I think I will order the Thrustmaster T-Flight HOTAS. At the reasonably cheap price I can't really go wrong. At the least I believe it will bring a better level of immersion to the game for me:)

Haven't had a stick for years, but I remember vividly how awesome a hotas setup was for wing commander, freespace, and starlancer etc was back in my youth, and I just KNOW any HOTAS would be better than M&k :D

You won't regret it I'm sure.

I had precisely the same experience and impression of a HOTAS when I first used it. I was used to mouse + kbd control exclusively and the HOTAS felt out of control and sloppy in comparison. The feeling lasted for some weeks, but I was constantly swapping between the two. Eventually I settled on the HOTAS and after a week of using it only it "clicked" with me, and I havn't looked back since.

Keep practicing - I guarantee that after a short while you will wonder why it ever seemed difficult, and will find going back to mouse control to be amazingly limiting.

For the T-Flight I recommend yaw being set to stick twist (z-rotation). Keep pitch, roll and yaw on the stick - it is most intuitive that way.

And the insanity of ED continues..

CH pro pedals, ordered.
This is becoming a very expensive game...

Not really so sure if rudder control is crucial to ED in particular, but I just now at least got the idea that they could also work for directional thrust, hmm.
Something like right foot forward = thrust up, left foot forward = thrust down.

Played since the beginning with a stick and a gamepad. Well, the stick died on me, so I got an X-55 Rhino. Before I really try it, in light of Elite craziness I am now building a gaming chair (really repurposing the old office one that was sitting in my workshop) that would house the stands for the HOTAS, articulating surface for mouse and "crotch computer" (an Asus T100 primarily used for tracking trade data), and powered USB 3.0 hub that would provide juice for these gimmicks and also charge my headphones.

Hi Tor, I have the CH Fighterstick/ CH Throttle it is terrific. There is a downloadable profile that uses the CH Software to load a profile for ED. I use it , all functions programmed to buttons , makes it easy. Dont know about the pedals , yaw is programmed to hat under right thumb on stick. Vert/Horiz thrust programmed to mini stick on throttle under left thumb.

I startet ED with a Logitech G9 and a Corsair K70.
I thought I had everything I needed.

Then I tried a cheap Thrustmaster T Flight X and I can't go back to mouse/kb.
It's superior in every way.

It's similar to the difference between driving F1 2014 with mouse and keyboard vs. steering wheel and pedals.
