So, I just purchased a second hand hotas (x52 pro). Plugged it in and it seemed to install ok. Elite recognised it and I switched my controller to the new hotas. At that point, I lost control of the PC, as though another user had remotely taken control. A number of things happened in game - first dumping cargo immediately but then reporting contacts and then trying to log in to the store and buy Arx. Once on the desktop, it then tried to access windows defender and I cut power to the PC.
Looking at the windows update log, it seems not to have installed drivers for itself (although the regular dialogue box told me that it was doing that). Malwarebytes is finding nothing.
Has anyone experienced anything like this before? The obvious answer is that someone modified the hotas firmware in order to attack both the PC and also (weirdly) ED. I think it's the firmware as the PC functions normally with the hotas unplugged and I cannot find either downloaded malware or evidence that it downloaded anything, including drivers.
While that's the most obvious explanation, it also seems vanishingly unlikely. It implies someone spent a lot of time and money compromising a device in order to mess with the person they sold it to.
