HOTAS X45 v X52...

Man, that brings back memories. Can't tell you how many hours I spent playing TIE Fighter on those.

Did you have the first edition, with the AT-to-PS2 connectors? =D

Yep, Big fat AT connector and IIRC serial for the mouse! Meant I kept my AT keyboard and Mk1 Serial Intellimouse (the one without a scroll wheel!) way after pretty much all keyboards and mice were PS/2!

Well not the end of the world, I'd held onto them from my Win98 days and it wasn't like I even had a game port anymore! :)
(although saying that I have my MS Sidewider FFB mk1 working in Win7! :D)

Nice! I like the MS Sidewider Force-feedback stick for the "kick" myself.
Though I only demo'ed it in the stores, but not bought it. :)

I bought one second hand, then realised it wasn't supported in XP..... threw it on a shelf and then later discovered this - https://code.google.com/p/adapt-ffb-joy/
Dusted it off, bought a few parts and it works perfectly in Win7. Just not enough buttons for ED. :(

Amazing! Thanks very much for that link. :D
Did not realise there was somebody doing hardware hacks for the Sidewinder FFB stick.
Going to be really useful when I can get my hands on a refurbished FFB stick.

Agreed on the buttons not being enough.

I must admit I now regret getting rid of the X36T as it could work nicely with it, use the extra two axis for the rudder rocker and throttle...
Unfortunately the code is only a hex blob so can't modify to add more than the axis but theoretically could also get all the buttons to work.

Even then though still not enough buttons!

I haven't used the other joysticks mentioned here, but I did get the x55.
And I am very glad. The precision is picture perfect (with a bit of practice), it has twist for yaw which feels very natural for those complex rolls for tight maneuvers and touch up aiming.

In addition, it has a total of 42 buttons (from what i can count, the switches are 2 buttons, 1 for each direction to flip it).
I've mapped every single ED control (aside from some map and communication controls) to the x55.

Additionally the 3 switches at the bottom of the throttle control are lined up very nicely for managing your power distribution.

Also, the nipple/mouse thing is digital only so thruster control is a little harsh!

I use an X45 with Elite and noticed the same thing. I get around it by mapping the throttle hat switch (under your index finger) to thruster, and the mouse thing is my head tracker.

I totally agree about the driver issue - I'd love to be able to map the throttle dials to bands for certain settings, but I can't because of the driver BSOD. That's a relatively minor thing, though. I'm not a fan of twist-to-yaw, so I imagine I'll stick with the X45 for a while.
