housekeeping and general performance tips for upgrade

G'Day all,

I am about to upgrade from my GTX970 to a 1070 and take the plunge into VR with an Oculus Rift Touch rig.

In preparation I have done some benchmarking of my current setup.

You can see that here:
https://www.3dmark.com/spy/3901801

which shows the 970 still doing a reasonable job sitting pretty much smack bang in the mean/median range of the results.

I also ran the VRMark and again got a pleasing result considering this is a 4 year old machine
https://www.3dmark.com/vrpor/230471

Next I will be installing the EVGA GTX1070FTW and rerunning the benchmarks but before I do that I want to ask for some advice on prepping my system for best performance.

This is Windows 10 and pretty much built for E:D from the start and I must say even though Ive had a break from the game it has always played smoothly at Ultra level graphics.

I am aware of the differences to expect with VR and am well versed on the kinds of limitations and aspects of the experience which can lead to disappointment - hence my jumping on a quality GPU upgrade that did not cost the earth - it is a second hand card that presents as new (no dust or handling marks, original box and receipts and all the caps/plugs for the rear and pci etc). even if the VR "isn't for me" then I will have a card that ups me to similar performance to the 980ti that I couldn't afford back at the start.

The machine is:

I have Corsair water cooling and a number of fans but nothing fancy. The PSU is Corsair RM750 so I should have plenty of power overhead and the case is roomy for cooling/airflow.

One of the problems of housekeeping I want to solve is the amount of mess that I;ve gotten into with my E:D Game Files.

I have this kind of thing going:

E:\EDLaunch\EDLaunch>

and, having played with EDProfiler I know my game options are under my profile.

The game dist is no doubt inside the Frontier Developments or Frontier_Developments folders and is currently running fine.

So, What is the very best way to clean up this system state?

Can I move the current EDLaunch up to the E: root after renaming EDLaunch ___EDLaunch (since there are already two of these with leading '_' from previous issues with the game not updating/validating etc)

and then delete all the other *EDLaunch directories?

OR should I bite the bullet and do a complete system rebuild and install clean?

This is something I am prepared to do if it is not a false economy...

I suspect though that that would provide marginal benefits if any, with a new GPU and switching into the VR experience there will be little to compare to from this state to the next from the perspective of the actual in game visuals.

I really then just want to do a proper system housekeeping and get all the additional packs and modules I use in order (*like voice attack and the HOTAS etc) and make sure I have only one instance of the game installed.)

Any other tips for prepping my system for max fun while "im in there" would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance to other commanders with much gaming experience outside mine!

Best
Will

If you want a clean, swift system, the reinstall is always the best option.

Other than that, the only thing I really recommend is to keep the VR games installations on SSD. It's the only case where it seems to really make a difference. I've never noticed a difference in any game when playing it from SSD versus the secondary hard drive, but as you can go pretty high in graphics settings on 1070, it can help. The game is hauling quite a lot of data around when playing VR.

That being said, you don't really NEED to do anything, except switching the game from the monitor to HMD in options. :)

In any case, have fun!

Thanks for the reply Chris Simon. I will take the SSD aspect into account - good advice.

I am following up with my updated bench now the 1070 is installed.

Considerable improvement.
Here;s the comparison
https://www.3dmark.com/compare/spy/3902354/spy/3902046

the GTX 970 scored 3,750 on TimeSpy - better than 24% of all results
the GTX 1070 scored 5,871 on TimeSpy - better than 59% of all results

This bodes well for E:D

Look op always Reinstall windows when you make significant upgrades. If it is just the video card then just use display driver ininstaller. Get it from 3dguru. Use it in safe mode and pick drivers that compliment your library. Ask on 3dguru's forums what could be best for your situation. Good luck

Thanks man, that is a great resource - I’ll have a read there. I may do some benches when I have my Rift and then do a clean install, rinse and repeat.
There’s bound to be heaps of cruft and the multi monitor stuff on there which will be redundant.

Btw is there any advantage to keeping my gtx970 on board? It can’t “help out” in any way can it ?

Did you run a score on 3DMark Firestrike test, or is that outdated now ?
Also I think it is the free version, not paid for.

Good luck with your re-build.
