How about having some kind of "achievement" awards in the game?

If they did add this they should make sure the top end achievement require quad Elite, max ranks for the Feds and Empire, unlocking all system permits, and owning one of each power play module.

So basically the same as keeping the CQC ranking in the menu?

I know that causes lost sleep for some people and it is hard for them to cope with.

Achievements in the menus, probably not I would say, but under another tab near statistics would be fine. They would also be tucked away for those that don't really care for them.

I was just having fun. Not criticizing or anything. Just pointing out how minor things are massive to different people.

I could care less where it was put lol. Though a vocal crowd would indeed want it in the menus.

Since I started playing ED, I operated under the guise that the "unknown" is truly unknown, not just unchecked by me. There are stars no one has seen. You should not get a medal for seeing it, since no one knows it exists so one couldn't be made. Maybe once one is discovered, you can be another visitor and you could get something like a WESTPAC or Golden Shellback or something along those lines (US Navy). That could be delivered by those who have done it, not FDev. So you have to get it tacked on.. lol

elaborate answer:
I have never understood all the fascination about achievements. Especially when they got granted by trivial stuff. You play the game, made your first jump? Achievement unlocked. Scooped a star? Achievement unlocked. Scanned a stellar body? Achievement unlocked. Damn... what kind of an achievement is this?

Achievements are meant to show that you actually achieved something big. Unusual. Like travel to the core of the Galaxy under XX hours. Not the fact going there alone. Within given frames. Which requires proper ship with proper equipment (non engineered to get rid of luck RNG). This is an achievement. Driving for X km / minutes in a rover isn't.

And IF we get achievements implemented I bet it will be as in other games. Someone already mentioned that: bought first ship? Replaced a mod? Your first engineering roll? First discovery? First jump? First 100 LY covered? Meaningless. They will probably put Hutton into achievement too. And since it will be an achievement people will go there just to get some virtual point for going there.

I , personally, couldn't care less about achievements. Got that in WoW and after initial interest I don't mind them, with the exception of major game play issues that are hidden behind achievements (like unlock flying). Oh look, I got my character to level 60. Wee... not. I would get to level 60 anyway on my way to max (which is currently 110). Getting achievement for that means nothing. Same will be in ED. I made 1k LY distance? Cool, except I'd do it anyway because I'm trading.

Achievements are meh but I suppose there are poeple who need a pat on their back because they managed to put a full spoon into their mouth without spilling its content.

To you perhaps, but not to everyone. Yes, you can just do it as you say, but sometimes its good to be inspired by different ideas that you may not think of yourself (I don't know of this planet of death you mention for example). It can also help give people a sense of accomplishment & provide some entertainment - what is wrong with that? For those that it doesn't then no harm no foul, you don't have to do them yourself.
Exactly. I just heard one the other day that I hadn't heard of before, so if not having it in the game, perhaps some website or some thread in this forum could provide with suggestions for personal achievements? Is there a thread for this?

True. I don't like those achievements either. Too easy. Like the ones in NMS, you get them in a day or two. I was thinking more like going to the Zurara rift expedition derelict in Syreadiae JX-F C0 where you have to use the Heisenberg Bridge to cross. You kind'a need an FSD engineered ship to begin with, and also know how to use the neutron path, etc.

That's what I meant with achievement. The big things. Not "managed to dock in a station" (even though it's an achievement the first week a beginner plays it, lol).

You might be right. So perhaps we should have a thread in the forum instead where we put in suggestions for high award achievements? I have a list, but I'm sure eventually I run out of ideas.

Yeah. Those aren't the ones I was thinking of. Going to Sag*A or Beagle's point are some that I have on my bucket list which I think are more high awards than "managed to turn on computer" award.

To me, the idea wasn't to get a pat on my back but rather to give me (or help me) make the bucket list. And sure, it also feels good of course when you've accomplished it. But it's not for everyone, just like PVP combat is basically at the bottom of my list.

---edit

Besides, we already do have several achievement systems built into ED, ranking, reputation, and other, and they don't hurt the game, or at least I don't think they do. Becoming read admiral and get access to federal corvette, is that a "NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!" also? A rank is basically just a graded achievement as any other. So why can't we have one for exploration?

I don't have any links handy but there has been many threads posted in the past with lists of things to do. Bucket lists, what to do when bored etc .. Few in my achievement thread too. :)

Why would people be against having something else to do in the game? It seems like a no brainer - it would help keep the interest of a good number of players, and is harmless for those who aren't interested in them.

That's my point. These things should come from the imaginations of gamers and be done because they can be done. Not because of some dumb list with little pretty pictures and a scorecard.

It actually takes a coder time to put in the code to count and activate and list those dumb achievements. Someone in the art department has to draw those dumb pictures. It's not free. And for the code to work it has to wind it's way throughout the entire game like a parasite. The best part is when this parasite gets bugged and screws the rest of the game, just because some people can't do obvious things without a picture and list. It's not harmless at all.

Valid points. I will stick to my personal list instead.

Meh, they'd all be like this:

kill a cmdr
get killed by a cmdr
get blown up by station
do a community goal
dock with 1% hull
run out of oxygen
discover a new star system
scan a complete system
wing up with a player
try multicrew
etc.

I think achievements would be fine. It isn't something that carries much weight with me but if it makes someone else in the game happy, that sounds good to me. I may actually engineer something if there was some achievement behind it. Right now, I couldn't be bothered. I am a bit worn out with thinking up my own goals and objectives in this game and I think it's because I like interaction outside of my own head. This is one reason I play video games. Achievements would be one more way that the game could interact with me.
