How about some more Recon for the SRV?

Since the update I've really got into driving the SRV around again and collecting materials.

One of the things I've always thought was missing from the Surface Reconnaissance Vehicle is a good pair of binoculars.

The turret is just used for shooting things and isn't much use for anything else, and it's not even useful for collecting materials as it auto aims on surface deposits anyway.

I suggest fitting an optics package to the turret that will allow for several levels of zoom and also a range finder that will tell you the distance to the object you're looking at.

This crater is huge!

(This is a really fun drive by the way I'd recommend it)

I'd love to know the distance to the centre peak from the rim before I set off and it would also allow me to calculate how far I have traveled on a particular journey as well.

Taking it further you could add other functions such as night sight and various spectral modes i.e. IR, UV, etc. although I'd be happy with just a zoom function and rangefinder.

Nearly there! But then I thought that an hour ago....

This crater is seriously huge, I've spent probably getting on for six hours driving towards this mountain in the last couple of days.

If I'd known how far it was maybe I wouldn't have tried, or maybe I would have thought screw it, lets do this! But I have collected a ton of materials along the way.

Either way FD I think you're missing a trick here. As it is so difficult to even guess what the scales of distances are you're missing a chance to give us a sense of awe at how small we are and how huge things are.

Also knowing how far away something is would allow players to set their own goals and achievements. All I know from this is that I've driven a hell of a long way. If I'd known it was going to be, say a 150KM drive I would feel weirdly proud that I'd been mad enough to actually do it.

Maybe we could even use it to take measurements at Guardian and Thargoid surface sites? Could potentially add a lot of new ways to explore! [up]
