How about watching CQC matches? CQC (and PU) Clans/Guilds? E-Sport? How about... F2P CQC?

I just skimmed an article on a german IT news site about an interview they did with someone from the E-Sports scene. That person claimed F2P is the best business model for E-Sports games.

While I have no interest in E-Sports, that article certainly wasn't based on highly scientific studies and a lot of the details about CQC have yet to be revealed, it nevertheless got me thinking. In one of their interviews someone from FDev rather humbly stated something along the lines, that they're not explicitely planning to target the ESport scene with CQC, but would'nt mind, if CQC established itself there. It sounded like they were at least trying to design CQC from an E-Sport POV.

Will there be a spectator mode for CQC? Not something tacked on when it's too late, but something integrated from the beginning. Seeing as there are team based modes, will there be clans/guilds - also from the beginning? Some form of defining groups of players, including member roles, private communication within that group and joining a CQC match as a group (which would probably just as much appreciated in the "public universe", at least if some form of dedicated PvE missions for groups were introduced at some point)?

Last, but not least: As FDev is apparently introducing CQC as separate mode which can be started from the main menu - what are the Pro's and Con's in respect to a free 2 play model for CQC (and only CQC)? This would certainly lower the barrier of entry for new players to try their hand at a meaningful part of what constitutes the fun in Elite - dogfights. The "PU" could still be locked behind a purchase.

Implementing CQC as F2P mode, adding clan and spectator support seems to be a route I'd at least consider, if I were working at frontier. Other games have shown that vehicle-based F2P games can be successful (World of Tanks, War Thunder, ...) and Elite's flying model is probably one of it's greatest strength. Any thoughts? Constructive ones? (We by now all know that many consider F2P, console ports and not having all desired features implemented and launched bug-free the week before last a sacrilege. And yes, the game can still do with a lot of work in many other areas than the mentioned ones.)

I would LOVE to spectate matches....I hope this functionality makes it in. At the very least it could be a learning tool for players trying to improve their own skill.

I'd be surprised if we can't view the matches when live if they want to attract Esports.
I have seen other games forget this feature and add it later.

It would be cool if we could land at station, take a stroll to the sports bar and watch it on big screen, ha ha.

i wish ppl would stop saying the term e-sports

some nerds sitting at a desk playing computer games is not sport

Personally I want CQC about as much as I want to stick my head in battery acid....but thats just me. As for watching other people? what is the point of that?

Personally I enjoy watching competent players play games well...It's also a learning experience if you can now imagine what your ship is capable of. It has the potential to be as exciting as any other competition.

Meta discussion about the term e-sport won't make the phenomenon disappear. It's highly competitive, the skill in their respective games that players have to aquire are on an incredibly high level, apparently a lot of people like to watch it and there's money in it. Physical skills may not be required in comparison to "classical" sports, but the mental ability to judge situations in the context of an abstract set of rules and quickly take the appropriate steps that are required of players to fulfill a win-condition is there, just as it is in what you'd probably consider a real sport. Call it "games" if you will, but e-sports seems to be the established term for competitive gaming.

What's the point in watching a match of soccer when you could be out on the field or in the street and play it yourself? Or rather: Just because you don't like to watch soccer, should there be no stadiums and no TV broadcast of matches? I have a hunch that the clubs, leagues or other stakeholders (which FDev partly represents in this context) will very much care, because that's what brings them money, by popularizing and commercializing the sport, their specific team etc.. The crowd who likes to watch sports seems to be there. Whether CQC will it have in it to become a popular eSport, even if all theoretical requirements are fulfilled, is a different question.
