How am I going to afford a bigger ship with only 10cr a run?

So I'm in the starter ship - I buy some goods and sell them at the best profit I can find and make about 10Cr..... thinking I did pretty good I stop by a shipyard to see how many runs I need to buy a ship and they are obscenely expensive.... How can I carry more than 4 items so I can make some money to buy a bigger ship?

Do bulletin board missions, sell your scanner and buy more cargo space. Its a gradula process, sidewinder, haluer, cobra. Its doable because a lot of peoplwe have done it.

For the beginning, trading is IMHO the thing NOT to do!

I'd suggest you mission and cargo runs... pays more... ;-)

There are better profit margins to be found.
There are other ways to make money aside from trading (missions, bounty hunting, exploring, etc)

I'm not sure how much cargo space the sidewinder can have but generally go to stations and check the 'internal' compartments at shipyards for cargo racks to adjust the size of your cargo hold.

You have MUCH to learn my friend. Fly around in supercruise and look for "Unidentified Signal Source". Drop in on it and see what you find.

Do the trade missions until you have enough cash to upgrade your ship for the kill missions. Also be careful with "bring us x amount of Y for z amount of profit" as the buy out price for Y can be more than you got right now.

I tried a mission but all it told me was the system and I could never find the dude to shoot and than a player shot me :(

So you just started of with ED?!

Well, killing missions, don't accept them if they show up over 100k bounty... as you'll encounter an anaconda which will kill you faster than you'll understand what's going on :)

The search and kill is easy: go to the system the pirates were spotted (mission), cruise at low speed and jump in USS you encounter (unidentified signal sources). After a few if not the first, you'll encounter what to kill ;-) Then go back for payment (if you get killed, mission fails ;-) )

have fun and don't give it up, it's a hard but nice way up ;-)

do the trading and courier missions first - transport commodity A to planet B. It also gives you a good hint of wehat to carry with you in your remaining holds when you start off. Avoid the "go find me this commodity" initially unless you know exactly where to get something
.
its a steep learning curve - and a slow process but if you stick with it it becomes very simple

Welcome to the galaxy commander,

as has been said before: Forget trading in the beginning. I would't recommend missions at the moment either. The mission timer does not stop when you are logged off and if you are still learning it is very easy to screw up your reputation. What I did when I started is "USS hopping". Look for a moderately secure system. Go into supercruise and cruise about at minimum speed of 30 km/s. Check your left navigation side panel. Look for unidentified signal sources. As soon as one pops up target it, switch back to front view, align yourself and disengage supercruise to jump into the USS. Check for pirates (wanted ships). Kill pirates, collect bounty, rinse and repeat.

The first 20,000 should go into an A1 power distributor, as it improves your overall fighting capability a lot (you can boost more often, fire longer etc.). It is actually pretty easy to rack up a lot of cash that way. Once you have upgraded some more read the forums to get tips and hints for the missions and then start to do some missions. You will get a Viper in no time this way.

I just started 4 days ago. I found that if you check the bb, you'll usually find a mission worth at least 2k which doesn't require much from you. Once you've built up some credits you can get some better trade missions. My best so far required that I buy 40k worth so stuff but paid out 100k. I know have about 200k and am looking to buy my first new ship. I also got a docking computer early on that helped with the tedium of parking.

Honestly, I would love a nav com to handle the slow down to 'J' moments but you have to ask at what point would the game be playing itself.

So there you go strager a few ideas of how to start
.
quite a few ideas and all of them are good in fact none of them are anything I could argue with. I have my own ideas how to play elite others havce vastly different ideas and we are all right
.
Thats what makes it a great game - go find your own way and play it how you want to
.
Just remember the name ELITE and dangerous
.
It is extremely unforgiving - if you do something stupid it will hurt and you will get little sympathy for stupidity

Just to reiterate do delivery missions. Buy more cargo space. Check markets at your destinations for goods with high supply/demand and that are well below /above galactic average. A couple of hours of that and you will have enough for a hauler. Will double your trade capacity.

I'd suggest doing cargo missions on the bulletin board until you either ... 1. get 100k or so for a viper. or 2. get 20-30k to upgrade your ship. If 1. then you would eventually end up bounty hunting, 2. I would also recommend bounty hunting in nav beacons with some decent weapons and shields.

I suggest using [this] to plan out ship designs before actually spending credits. But keep in mind you can sell parts for 100% refund.

By the way, a nav beacon is a place you can target in the navigation tab of the left window, they are usually near the stars you jump to from hyperspace. After targeting the beacon, you can fly over to it in supercruise as if you were going to a station, inside the beacon area there will be random ships flying around. Some ships will be show up as wanted, you can check their bounty on the contacts tab of the left window, after killing the target you can redeem the bounty in a station of the same faction that gave you the bounty. The transactions tab will show you how much you have earned.

Also remember to never fly without insurance! The window to the right shows how much your current ship and it's setup costs, if you have that much money as it shows, you can pay to get your ship back, if not then you start out in the stock sidewinder you get right at the beginning.

Welcome to Elite: Dangerous, commander.

How do you check the markets without docking at each station individually?

We all started with a sidewinder and 1000Cr. Im at a 25M Cr (ish) T7 now with a 3M Cr Viper and 20M Cr float. Its a gradual process and I am by no means a full time player. I started trading early. I kitted it for cargo and did the leesti/lave etc rares trading run till I got enough for a T6. I ran with no shields for the extra cargo space. Then I got the T7 and now just do normal commodities for a while and then jump in the Viper for missions and a bit of shooting.

Its not a race, its a marathon and your only competing against yourself. :) Good luck and have fun. Remember to always have enough insurance to cover the cost of your ship and enough money for cargo. dont spend it all. :)
