Engineers How am i supposed to know where to find whatever the engineers want to unlock them?

hey there forum,

i just started getting a bit into engineering and i got two invites from two engineers. they both want a rare commodity in order to unlock them. for example felicity farseer want one unit of meta-alloys.

my question is, how am i supposed to know where to look for them? i know that i can just look it up online but i like to know if the game itself tells you. i read that the engineers themselfes tell you where to find what they are looking for and the player can look it up in the engineers window but i can't seem to find any info.

can someone shed some light into this issue?

thank you all for your time.

cheers

you can either read the gal net from ingame - there are various articles about meta-alloys in the last months -, or you can fly to one of the stations having demand of meta alloys (names can again found via gal net weekly report) - commodity description will help you where to find it.

As with may things in ED, you have to rely on third party sites to find the information. Inara and EDDB are often the preferred sites players use.

Unfortunately, FD appear to be far too sparing with information in game. They appear to enjoy making us search for the proverbial needle in a haystack. 400 billion stars but only one of them has what you want, guess which one?

Not true.
All the information regarding engineers is present in game.
Basic engineers' invite requirements are basic and easily accomplished, even unknowingly, by simply playing the game. trade for a while, explore, bounty hunt, smuggle,... and you'll get the invites.
The rest of the engineers are chained together and you will gain the info on them from your unlocked engineers. All materials have info boxes that will tell you where you can obtain them, all the invitation requirements and donation info is given to you beforehand.

Don't make it sound like the game lacks information. Third party tools are making things easier and information more condensed, yes. They are also borderline exploits.
So I would actually advocate a common sense and exploratory spirit if you are looking for information in game. If you google everything you want to know about the game, you will end up bored and nitpicking on the forums.

AfaIac the in game information is a bit lacking for now.
I don't like to use external sites at all, but I am forced to do so concerning the engineers all the time.
I hope this will improve eventually.

I would like there to be some sort of encyclopaedia on board of the ship with all the info I need, and more, about the ED universe.
I also would like to have full access to information about engineer blueprints once I have fulfilled the engineer's initial access requirements.
And FD should be completely transparent about where to find materials and under which circumstances (f.e. system states).
This is necessary to be able to plan my material acquisition.
Currently I always have the Inara website open and I switch between game and webbrowser for info on material lists, blueprints etc.
I don't like it at all, although I am glad we have Inara to fall back on.

I say, Old Chap, calling them borderline exploits is a bit strong .... they are a composition of other commander's searches and experience. In the same way that the Canonn thread brings together commanders' ideas to solve the riddle of the ruins and other mysteries. You can hardly say that thread is a borderline exploit, neither therefore are Inara and EDDB, etc.

Rather, FD has been remiss in not providing apps to improve the in-game experience that these external sites do provide. [yesnod]

Sometimes they tell you. The screen with the donate entry sometimes tells you where to find the thing they want. Unfortunately, not always.

Hey, I didn't say they are explicit exploits. :p
You have to admit, though, that they take away from the game experience. Anyhow, just voicing my opinions, here. In my eyes, they are the same level of exploit as the save-scumming.
If some newcomer comes and asks where to find XY, I send them there, too. It's just that I don't like using them, myself.
