How are explorers finding these mysteries/persistent surface POIs?

Since the Formidine Rift expedition was found, I've been wanting to get into some exploration. I already know how to outfit my ship and the basics of exploration (which is why it hasn't really appealed to me). One thing that is really bugging me is how little information there is in actually finding these places. For example: the Barnacles, crashed alien ship, alien ruins, etc. are not detected as POIs on your scanners! So you have to spot them visually? Given the size of planets and how many there are in the game, there's got to be a way of deducing which planets are actually worth flying over, right? I've heard it mentioned that using a DSS will detect anomalies, or that planets with anomalies will make a different sound in the system map - but I've yet to see proof of such claims (and believe me, I've been searching).

So explorers, what are your methods of actually finding these mysteries out in the black? I want to join you.

The way I understand it, the last two discovered alien ships had surface co-ordinates explicitly given to Commanders by listening posts or other puzzles. The first crash site, barnacles and alien ruins were found by just flying high and spotting them visually.

The alien ruins in particular was an amazing find from CMDR xDeath cause he deduced the system from the stars from the trailer, then just brute forced searched the surface till it was found. From my experience locating various surface POIs like geysers, fungi, the more you discover, the better you get at looking for them.

Its a needle in a haystack story.
I have yet to discover a geyser, let alone something infinitely more rare.
The cannon group seem to deduce the best areas to look.
It would be good if FD could come up with some gameplay that didn't require a select crew of genius nerds to figure out the clues.
Or maybe as soon as a new discovery is made, decrease its rarity so the rest of the players can experience it in their own way rather than just visiting the site already discovered.

This is why many are pushing for a better way of discovering things with a better scan system. 4 BILLION systems, countless planets = impossible hay stack. [wacky]

I still find it really crazy that he was able to find those ruins just by looking around. Even with knowing exactly where to look, it is still easy to fly over them and miss them! I agree with the op that, aside from the base game mechanics of exploring stuff (discovery scanners etc), there aren't (or atleast they aren't apparent yet) many methods of finding these anomalies using ingame tools/searching, which is a shame. It's an interesting idea about the different sounds in the system map as clues etc. Stuff like that would be cool. I had a thought that it would be interesting if you could maybe spot a light(s) on the dark side of a world as a clue to the presence of a game mystery etc....basically something in game that would make it easier to stumble across things to be discovered.

I often wonder, when I am out exploring/ landing on new worlds, have I ever been on the same world/system as some mystery object yet to be discovered, and never saw it/realized it was there? Probable.

We often here Frontier say there are a lot of things in the game that have not been discovered yet that they thought we would have found by now.

Maybe a scanner that would require you visit an anomaly to gather its signature.
New discoveries would still need to be made,so the cannon guys still get to do their thang:cool:
I think its time to let the players see some content.

I've found a few geyser sites on small potato worlds, but that's a few sites out of dozens of failures where I couldn't find anything. So many hours spent searching, and they aren't even worth any credits or anything in game!

The DSS can tell you if geysers are on a planet, but Elite badly needs better tools for exploration. In my opinion the surface map created by the DSS should really highlight search areas where the geysers and fumeroles are located, this would at least narrow it down from the entire planet surface to manageable search zones. Some planets are huge, and it's just currently nigh impossible to actually find anything on them simply due to their surface area.

Planetary bookmarks, in addition to 34th century surface scanners (i.e. moar data).

First of all. Mad props to cmmder x death. How he figured that out. We need to put that boy on a shuttle to mars. Secondly, if there is stuff to find thats been there since beggining and hasnt, why not drop some more clues. As other have said. Its an extremely large haystack. I have not visited the alien ruin but after watching obsidian ant locating it and talking about how you have to be up close for them to "pop". Meaning that if you do not stay close while looking for pois. Youre going to fly over and not have it pop and think nothing was there. Just seems kinda unfair to have some poor player playing aristotle bc thats what weve got to go on. Also i dont know how you can say we thought it would be found. So every dev at frontier has landed and explored every inch of every planet. Bc youre either saying it should be that simple or youre saying you dont realize how hard youve made this bc you subconsciously know the location so of course you wouldve chosen that planet out of haystack and explored up and down. Takes fdev to beach. Now find the grain of sand im thinking of. 2 hours later: thought you would find by now. At least my sand grain doesnt have pop in.

Can you do that in supercruise?

TBH I like it this way.

If 'new' mystery stuff was easy to find then it would all over a done within a couple of hours of Fdev activating it. that would make a mockery of any 'mystery' of the whole galaxy if you just have a system that goes,,,,,,,,,bing! Fly here to see some cool stuff! If thats your kind of thing then I suggest No man sky is for you.

I discovered my first geyser a week ago, I had to dedicate a full 3 day weekend to it and I basically flew in real-space over the entire planet's surface. It took forever, but when I found it, it was amazing!
