How are you approaching ED ? A game for 3 months and quit ?

How do you treat ED

So many posts about grinding etc to get to the next ship.

In the 80's, the original Elite captured me and it was a daily thing to play for a few hours alongside real life.
I would almost treat a real life day as 1 - 2 hours in Elite.

The problem with modern day people and games is that everything must be delivered now and I must have it otherwise I will complain.

I suspect that many players will leave ED after a few months because they just DON'T GET IT.

This game should grow with you, be part of your life when it can be and not hammered to death and COMPLETED in 1 month like other games.

I treat ED as a mortgage, an investment, it will grow with me, take time to master and eventually we will grow old together and retire in the sunshine.

So what are your thoughts ?

Spot on, all those people who complain that they won't get an Anaconda ever and then say well for at least a 100 hours or so!!!! I say good, because if that is what you aspire to, the game will have little to offer in the long term.

Elite Dangerous is not just for Christmas

Well, I just voted what the hell are you on about by accident haha! Can't figure out how to change it, so what the hell are you on about?

Seriously though the poll needs more than the two extremes.

I don't play any game for years, not even playing MMO's did I play for much more than a year or two at most!

I don't want to quit in 3 months, but I doubt I'll play for more than a year or so either. There are just too many other games coming that I'll be interested in, and I don't really devide my time between different games. I'm usually "all in" when I game, so it's one at a time for me.

For reference, I put about 900 hours into Skyrim. I can't really see myself devoting any more time than that to ED.

That's really up to Frontier Developments. If Frontier delivers the game I want (the fascinating, intricate game described in the DDA) I'll probably play it for years.

Yes I have logged with steam,3,240 Hrs On skyrim, the longest time i have ever spent on a game, and coming in second is civ 5 and the new civ beyond..I think that is because i truly felt involved you know going somewhere.though i played the orriginal Elite so i am a fan,I some how dont see me putting in that sort of time into Elite.Sad but true...IT Lacks...Every game in a small way should frustrate a little, but only a little,Elite Frustates a lot,and thats Bad.I think thats what the Guys mean

I'll be taking it very steady. I've played very sparingly throughout beta as I didn't want to get tired of the raw mechanics before the game was fully there. In my opinion it's still not fully there, so I'll be taking it easy for a while yet. Probably taking a lot more risks than I normally would, not worrying too much about making money fast and seeing if I can get involved in some local conflicts or even the unfolding storyline. Hopefully I will get more drawn in as the game fills out. I'd like to think that in a year or two I will be flying around with an Oculus CV1, landing my fully crewed ship on some distant alien world and getting out to explore with my partner.

I just want this game to become one of those games with a good little community where everyone knows everyone else and people have there one nemesis and past that everyone is just friends, sharing interests, living life, discovering new star systems.

This happened once with a little game called IronFell

My thoughts!.. you need to get out more..;)

+1, OP seems a little "sheltered". ED is computer game, it's not life. It's purpose is to entertain, to have some fun, not a 2nd job or something to grind away for 100's of hours.
Afraid in it's current state most people will be bored of it within weeks, there just isn't enough gameplay. And no I'm not talking about rushing to get the greatest ship, that doesn't interest me as having the next ship is really no different from having the previous one, the same boring gameplay or lack of it is still the same.

After doing some long trade runs, and having a few run-ins with the amazing scenery of this game, I am contemplating hitting the open trail for a nebula or something next. I got interdicted right outside of some asteroid resource area, and got to have a fight take place there while the sun was setting, was super surreal. I am loving the ASP's wide open cockpit with the Oculus Rift DK2. Sometimes my jaw just literally drops at the scenery. Just really cool. It might really be my favorite thing about the game, whether its an asteroid belt, eclipsing sun, or even a warzone. Everything is just so pretty.

I think I'm with you on this one OP. I'm one of the old guard and still want to play this game the same way I did the original in '84. Back when I was a kid I once stayed up for 2 weeks solid, literally from the morning I woke up on the last day of term to the night before the day before the new term started, playing the original Elite on my C64. From what I've experienced thus far of E: D, aside from the bugs and crashes I'd expected from the pre-release, I gotta say that I think this might be the game that Elite could've and should've been. This means that I fully expect to lose all track of time again, maybe even to the point of beating my 2 week record, but only once I've built myself a dedicated PC to take over from the laptop I'm currently using.

I'm planning to win the game on the 16th. Be crowned emperor of the empire and president of the federation and destroy the alliance. Then I will probably go to bed.;)

I will definitely "take my time", but will I play ED in years to come... I have no idea, to be honest. It's up to them devs.

I'm hoping they can pull off what they hope they can, with planetary landings, walking around your ship or station, alien life, etc. Then, when the Oculus consumer version gets released, this game will take on a whole new level. Thats what i'm hoping for in the long term.

Elite Dangerous is not just for Christmas

A week away from the release date and the game already has little to offer.
Shiny ships are about all there is.
Mining sucks
Exploration sucks
Trading is a grind
PvP interaction is almost non existent
PvE interaction is not quite passable

Hate to draw the comparison, but take a look at what EvE online has to offer.
Missions are interesting (though not always thrilling) and there is plenty to do, so much choice.
Yes, EvE has a head start, but i believe FD should be having a lot more content ready for day 1, with even more to come.
