How are YOU blazing your own trail in Elite?

2 x large gimballed burst lasers, 2 x medium gimballed cannons. No heat/energy issues, SCB's by the tonne, occasionally have to deselect target and aim manually if they spam chaff. The lasers (equal to vulture's total firepower) chew up anything small/medium/shields on the big-boys and the cannons eat subsystems (or small unshielded ships in a couple of shots). You need to use shield cells early though as the shields are quite weak, good thrusters counter this more effectively than a shield upgrade as you avoid a lot of fire.

I'm used to fixed burst but the hardpoint spread is just too wide for that to be effective, its now a technique for coping with chaff at range. (you can hit with one or the other not both) The clippers speed means you can get in close and keep hitting with gimbals even in a chaff cloud.

And if it goes wrong (which it does) you can outrun everything in the game.

Many thanks

Federation missions to move up the ranks. Generally take assassination missions and some data delivery. Usually as I'm looking for targets or doing a delivery I will pull ships with bounties out of SC. Take on 4 or 5 missions at a time from one fed system, collect bounties, tally it all up at the orginating system. Credits and fun at least for me.

currently helping out with the CG at Bast. food out, meds back in my python. small profits but i have plenty of money so not a problem. when thats finished i might dust off the asp and head out into deep space

I always try to mix it up.

Came back from a couple of weeks exploring, bought a Scout and tried buzzing around taking on much larger ships and getting repeatedly spanked. Switched to my (barely upgraded) Python and tried to save humanity by shipping meds to Bast and stop the plague. Took a break when offered a Fed Navy promotion mission, taking down pirate Eagles in my Python (like swinging a sledgehammer at mosquitos!), then back to Bast today.

Might try bounty-hunting again as I haven't tried that in a while. Also, since I finally have Ensign rank, might try the combat in a Dropship, for the giggles.

I've noticed that I'm always stuck in the same routine with this game; RES or CZ for an hour or two with the occasional assassination. Why? Honestly I asked myself that question for the first time recently and couldn't come up with a satisfactory answer. "I'm a Merc" is all my brain could come up with. I have a Vulture and a Clipper. Tried the other ships and didn't like them so collecting all ships is of no interest to me. I've tried trading and I'll never go back to that grind. I've been to Sag A* and beyond. Loved it and reached elite, but the only way I'll go back out for that long is when planetary landings are in. I tried powerplay, it's like RES or CZ except your rank with either factions gets demolished. At least that's how I played it by interdicting Federal Couriers. If my goal was to make a lot of money and if I had the time to get that 50mil payout I'd gladly do it. I've tried mining as well and didn't like it because of the constant fly swatting that needs to be done. One interesting thing I've discovered is that there are metal-rich rings out there that don't have any RES in them. There's one such gas giant a jump away from my current home system where I'm trying to get another permit and this ring doesn't spawn any npc pirates. Maybe I'll try mining in there, it's common reserves as well.

A couple of days ago I spotted a permit locked system so I worked my way to getting the permit even though that system has nothing interesting to offer. It was fun, I set up a realistic goal for myself and accomplished it with various tasks; pirate hunting, assassinations, a delivery here and there no matter the payout if it was on my route for the main mission and of course smuggling. Smuggling is something I enjoy a lot. I don't know if silent running actually does anything in 1.3, seems like you just have to be quick enough since it's very rare for me to get scanned on any occasion and for the scan to actually finish if it starts. Another thing I tried was kitting out an Eagle just for fun. An assassination contract was up for ~180k so I thought why not try and take on a bigger ship. What I did not expect was that the escaped convict was in an Eagle as well, in a wing with another a rank lower. Is this common knowledge? The ships of the assassination targets will be matched according to the ship you're flying? Because no way would you get an eagle as a contract if you were flying a vulture or a clipper.

So that's where I'm at in this game. How about you?

Merged both threads at ThirdNostril's agreement. Keep the stories coming, Commanders!

Hi

How do I blaze my own trail, well I jump in a spaceship and go do stuff.
Lots of stuff and the spaceship is always an Asp (I'm a certified* Asp'er by the way), got enough cash for a python now and a well equipped python at that, but somehow I prefer the Asp.
I tend to hang around the Altair-Lave rares route a fair bit, when not involved with other combat related stuff, do anti-pirate missions , mostly for the payout you get from the bounties plus the mission payout,, other than that,
go do some exploring, did try to make it to Sgr A* a few months ago, but kinda got sidetracked after Thor's eye, then bounced the ship into a contact binary system and decided to come home.
Dabbled in power play, but seems a bit weak as a game mechanic to me, so went out back exploring to the Orion nebula and the challenge of finding a system NOT scanned heh**
Currently, I'm sitting in a station in Glyton's hope, waiting for a mission, when was at Lugh, I wanted to be here, when I'm here , all I can think about is getting back out there..***

Bill

*or is that certifiable? :p

** Thanks to the idiot who scanned a star, but not the ww and the 2 TC's and the metal rich inner world

*** Cue the rest of the monologue :D

At the moment I am heading out on the Sagit A pilgrimage, before that I did some of the newer missions, a spot of trading too. I've looked at powerplay and it doesn't interest me, maybe if it changes i'll have a look. When I get to Sagit I will decide whether or not to return to "civilised" space or carry on into space.

I was somewhere in the vicinity of Barnard's Loop in a rickety old Hauler with a cracked canopy when I realised I had had one too many close encounters of the stellar kind and my life support module was at...7%. 50 jumps from the nearest station. With 5.5 million in exploration data and no auto repair module. Cue the most nerve-wracking series of fuel scoops I've ever made and a few hours on the edge of my seat with sweat on my brow.

Ranked up four times and got my name on a bunch of systems surprisingly close to the bubble.
That's right, I made it back in one piece. And they say exploration is dull.

Found something peculiar on the map. Canopus and Exphiay. Two anarchy systems belonging to the Canopus Crimson Dragons. Very low population and both systems are well isolated from the rest of inhabited space. Think I'm going to pay a visit. If you know it to be a waste of time for whatever reason don't tell me. I like surprises.

Smuggling es as the biggest pimp in the known universe. That's how I'm blazing my trail.

Nice post and rep to the OP. I mix and match to my hearts content. I won't do PowerPlay.
I explore in my Asp
I Bounty hunt in my Combat fitted Anaconda
I trade in my Trade fitted Anaconda
I look for BH missions in my Python.
I kill myself in my sidewinder if I catch a stupid bounty for a dumb npc cop or player who stupidly flies into my beams and blows up.
I do missions to rank up with both major Factions at my home base.

Wow.

Anarchy systems are intense. Almost every npc tries to interdict me in supercruise lol, even if I'm allied with their faction. Still in Canopus and Exphiay. The stations look so clean here. The missions are the same as anywhere else really but the fact that there is constant danger from interdictions makes it a lot of fun. Gonna check the stations in Exphiay to see if I can trade in my fuel scoop for 64t of cargo space, and hopefully they sell the same fuel scoop for when I decide to return. No human players here, at least I haven't seen any. According to traffic reports 2 diamondacks and 2 cobras passed through, most likely solo traders since there's a high supply of slaves here. Am I making a lot of money? Hell no. Am I having a blast? Hell yes.

I started out trading and doing a little combat until I had a Type 6, Cobra and Viper. Took the Cobra out on a short exploration trip, about 1500 ly from Sol, to figure out how to do that, then traded a little more to get some better kit for the Cobra. I then took a slow steady trip to the centre of the galaxy and back which took about 4 months and netted a nice little bit of cash. The earnings from that enabled me to upgrade the Type 6 to a Type 7 and the Viper to a Vulture. The Type 7 virtually doubles the amount I can trade and the Vulture is just awesome for combat. I'm now pledged to Aisling Duval giving powerplay a go whilst also doing regular trading, combat and missions on the side. The powerplay is ok, shipping the commodities around isn't that exciting but I do like the sense of being part of a group, rooting for my power and doing my bit to make it successful. I like to try just about everything the galaxy has to offer, didn't take to mining however and Ricky is a law abiding citizen (mostly) so haven't done any piracy/smuggling. Future goals would be buying an Imperial Clipper for trading/fighting and an Asp for another trip out into the galaxy. Beyond that, buying the larger ships Python, Type 9 and Anaconda, but I'm in no rush.

I go where the wind blows me
.
If I have loads of time I jump in my miner, a medium amount of time I'll trade, I rarely go looking for trouble but I don't care if it should find me. A short amount of time its into my courier and collect all those pesky little bounties
.
Occassionally I do a bit of exploring to see if I can find another pristine ring to go after, or I might get my nighthawk cobra out and do a bit of smuggling
