How can game reviews vary so much?

Why do you like onions and I don't?

Why do you drive a Ford and I'm in a Chevy?

People are people and everyone is different, seeing things based on their biases and upbringing.

Well, first of all, reviewers reviews all kinds of stuff on a regular basis so when they see something they've seen before, their interest and engagement plummets instantly. Ask a reviewer what they think of Gone Home, and then ask a person who only plays Fifa what they think of the same game. You'll most likely get completely different answers. This is probably why reviewer scores don't always correspond with user scores.
It's also about what the reviewer actually likes. Ask someone who played and loved the original ELITE to review ED and you will probably get a polarised review.

Or something. ^^
