How can I do link up with friends?

I have figured out how to add friends and add them to my group.
We know how to obviously plot a course to end up in the same sectors and stations however when it comes to
unidentified signals it doesn't seem to be easy to achieve or say if we wanted to go into combat in
one of those random encounters it seems not work or be able to be seen by all of us.

Also the tracking of friendly ships is a bit difficult.

Can someone explain the best way to be able to get all of us into combat at the same time?

I have googled and searched the forum however maybe the terms I am using are not correct.
Sorry if this is blatantly obvious to others however I have only been playing for less than a week and have been trying to watch as much twitch and you tube videos and google search as much as I can
between work and sleep.

any help would be appreciated

Thanks

If you mean to set up a private group, one of you creates a group which will have your own commander name (no ability to make custom group names yet). - You can find this under the groups tab under the Players and Groups option of the main menu.

Then your friends request to join your group through the same menu (they can do a search for your group (commander) name.

Once you have accepted their join requests, basically then everyone can start the game by selecting the Private Group option after clicking start, and selecting your group.

Be warned though. Apparently playing in group mode will get you labelled a carebear by some people *shrugs*

As for getting into combat at the same time, its do-able, with some points that need noting (but this will improve with 1.1 and again with 1.2 based off developer info).

The easiest way to do combat together is a at conflict zones. Those places are really designed for groups to work together. Nav beacons or resource extraction points are also good places. USSs though are not good for combat. What you can do is one person can drop into a USS (which others cannot see), and then the others can follow the first player down into the USS by targetting their low energy FSD wake. However, the outcome of this is that you usually cannot see their target... so you will see them flying around attacking nothing and being attacked by nothing. Hopefully 1.1 will solve this.

ah sweet, that explains a lot.

So the Private groups make it easier to track your squad or does it still require some manual finess? I am fine either way just wanted to ask.

I looked on the News Feed for a combat zone but couldn't see anything.
I checked another station however the news feed seemed to be the same.
Are they not that common at the moment?

So when someone enters a USS an FSD wake appears where it once was?
So far other than speaking to my team mates I have found it difficult to keep track of them,
I like to keep track of them like a sheep herder as some of them wander off and need to be kept on track.

The USS missions seemed to be the best ones for bounty hunting however if they are bugged at the moment it sounds like combat zones are the only way of seeing combat with your group?

sorry I might need further explaining :(

Thanks so far though

At the moment it is not reliable to meet up with friends in game. Some people have more luck than others.
There is a dependency on being connected on the same server and that's not easy to force.

The changes coming in the next version should improve the chances of meeting (for 1.1) and enable wings (for 1.2) so this will all get better.

Thank you, that's good to know.

Hopefully in those builds this will be addressed as playing with friends is a big part of my gaming experience.
If they could make the conflict zones come up in the news feed more often the little side missions wont be an issue.

I look forward to all future updates.

Excellent thanks Viajero
:)

Edit: I had a read through and we do not have these issues, we were able to add each other in the friends list and if we all told each other what system we're in we could travel to each other.
What I have found is that I have to press escape and go into the friends list to find them where I would have expected to be able to find that information through one of my HUD menus in my fighter that's all.

not being able to do the USS missions correctly is one thing that would be nice but as I understand it doesn't work correctly at the moment so no big issue at all.

The conflict zones, how frequently are they appearing in the news feeds at the moment?
They sound like the only sure fire way to have dog fights with friends on your team,
