Newcomer / Intro How can you work out a planet or stations tech level?

Hi All,

I'm trying to set up a trade route to get some credits (just beginning). I have a hauler and am looking for some pointers to work out what to carry and to where.

In the classic Elite (as I'm sure a large amount of people know) you could work out, for instance, that a high tech level planet would be selling computers cheaper then an agro planet. So you could buy computers at high tech world and sell at a agro station for a nice profit and then pick up food there and sell it back at the high tech planet for a small profit......just for instance. I have looked at the data on the maps but there is no tech level mentioned. What's the clues in ED?

Go to galaxy map, third tab (view), switch to Map from Realstic. Filters, show by color, choose economy. Select the one you want (high tech), de select the others. And voila! Look for the ones with the bigger population (can be seen under info tab while hovering mouse over them)

There is also a population slider right below where you select/deselect your filters. Slide that to about the middle and it will just show systems with 1 mil or above population.

Good answers everyone but not quite what the OP was asking I don't think. In the original Elite, every planet had a Tech Level from one to ten that gave you an idea of the prices you could expect for some goods, and the range of upgrades you could expect to see.

I don't think such a think exists in E: D, although arguably it would be nice to have, especially for upgrade hunting.

For general trading tips, this might help (check out the imgur link at the top of the page). It's a bit out of date and doesn't include all the commodities, but it's a good start. Also, the commodity descriptions on the trading screen can be helpful - sometimes they flat out tell you where to go for a sale.

That's a good point, i'm looking for some upgraded cargo units at the moment, the Tech Level in the original Elite would give a indication of where to go for certain upgrades.......in ED is it just a matter of hunting around, or are there any clues that might help me find cargo upgrades?
