Horizons How do Co-Ords work?

Hello all.

Strange title I know but I have gone to Merope 5c and the surrounding areas for the Meta Alloys, 1) to open up the engineers and 2) to sell.

If I am at for e.g. Merope 5c and I go to Latitude -26.3515 as per https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet...5ihWKXebt4BcM/edit?pref=2&pli=1#gid=223643326 and then move to Longitude -156.4056 how come both alter, this has drove me absolutely insane. I can be at the correct Latitude Co-Ords and just use thrusters to move and both alter. This cannot be right can it? If your going forwards and only forward then only 1 can alter.

No, if you go "forward" in NE direction both coords will alter, e.g. You need to stick to East / west OR North / south course to maintain one of the coords.

no. because you are moving on a "grid". you can go north, north-east, east etc. if you move north-east, both long and lat will change.

you will need to go down, and point your ship to 0 or 180 to change only one value, and to 90 or 270 to change the second.

pro tip: go down, point into the righ diraction, and move up 40 degrees, go to OC, and fly to the right coordinate, repeat for the second.

Nothing what you mentioned would work, (without sounding like a trumped up and ungrateful little oik I know how the Grid system regarding Long/Lat works otherwise I would be in a right mess when I use my Telescopes). Being told I was 12Km up and have a mountain loom in front of my cockpit made a part twitch. Anyone else have the problem of Planet surfaces going from dark to light? Its making it nigh on impossible to do surface missions.

Anyhoo I eventually found the Barnacle I was after in Pleione. What's going on? 'tis all gone. I would post a pic to show what I mean but a BMP is either too big or a .jpeg or .png are invalid files!? Is something else going to go wrong today regarding ED I wonder

Someone was there before you. ;)
Why don't you just buy the meta alloys at Maia?

And you can't upload images on forums directly, anymore. You have to post in on some hosting site (imgur.com) and link it here by "insert image via URL"

Yep it's a pain. In and out of SC to get you close then boosting around. It's an area of the game that needs some love ie being able to tap in your own surface waypoint with the coordinates would do the trick.

The biggest issue with finding something by coordinates is that you cannot see your compass heading while in orbital cruise. You have to drop down before you'll get a compass reading on your HUD. That makes it hard to locate stuff from OC.

I do what goemon suggests -- I drop down, figure out my compass bearing, choosing 0, 90, 180, or 270 as my bearing, depending on which coordinate I want to pursue first. I find it easier to do one coordinate, then the other, so I usually do latitude, then longitude.

Here's a (not very good) video of me doing this to find a Tip Off location. Maybe it will help demonstrate the method.

With a bit of practice you can do it in OC. By watching how lat and long numbers change (Whether they are increasing or decreasing and how fast) you can tell and correct your heading even without a compass.

yes, and I've done it that way. But it's faster to go down to the surface and find your bearing. At least I think so.

Well, I didn't even know they were for sale at Maia:eek:. Makes Barnacle hunting moot then eh! Unless ya like messing around for a Brazilian years. And even though I did like what was said in the previous posts AND in the vid, when I put my heading to 0, the Longitude and the Latitude both still changed dramatically. Obviously I did something wrong somewhere, like mistake a number like zero for a different one [blah]

If You're heading direct North and BOTH numbers change, then I guess it's a bug-report time. :D

No kidding. I have heard rumors that some planets have the coordinates reversed, but I haven't run into that one yet. But heading due north and both numbers change? Er...wow...should not be possible.

Well it must have been a bug. I went back in game and as I had left my ship at the Barnacle I thought sod it, try again. I lifted off, set my heading to zero and boosted, this time only my Longitude counted down, turned to heading 270, boosted and only the Latitude changed. Must have definitely been a bug.

I'm glad that simple restart fixed things. :)
