I'm new to mining and I'm doing it in a big ship. The first several times I used collector limpets they were single use. But then I got a hero limpet that just wouldn't quit. It automatically collected mining fragments without me having to target them, and when there were none it just hung out by my cargo bay. Is this normal or did I run into a fortuitous bug?

Don't target anything when you deploy them and they'll automatically collect anything within range. If nothing's around, they'll just hang out until there's more to collect, until their timer expires.
Thanks! Now I don't have to go out with 450 limpets and I outfitted myself with a collector controller with lots of active time. Kind of sad that it wasn't a hero limpet. He would have been up in the ranks of a hero zergling I saw in a SC2 cast that finished off a colossus that was kiting back. I'd have that zergling in my crew any day
