How do I avoid the Thargoids jumping out before my research limpets have completed?

This is getting really annoying. I've been trying for days now to get a tissue sample from a Medusa (I haven't even got onto the others yet). I've been trying to use the silent running method but the Thargoids always jump out before my research limpets have completed. On the three occasions I've managed to complete the research limpet, the research limpet has destroyed its self by flying into my ship, even though I was stationary. I've read there's a bug with this but even opening the cargo scoop at the last minute doesn't seem to have helped.

Does anyone have any tips?

Hmm, ok. It seems like the answer is to only bother with the USS with the green cloud since that keeps the medusa busy scanning derelicts so it can't jump out. Also I've now had some success with leaving the cargo scoop completely closed until I get the cargo scoop error and only then letting the limpet enter. Silly bugs :-(
