How do I buy a new cmdr if using Oculus?

As thread title. To those of you with second Elite accounts, how do I do this? The Oculus store tells me I have already purchased the game so I cannot pay for a second account. I want to start a brand new commander to try Open, not being afraid of exploding, becoming wanted, piracy etc, etc.

Any help appreciated, thanks.

It is no different to doing the same for 2D.

You can buy a new account in either steam or frontier store, with a different email address, and then fudge the launcher. My launchers always starts the Oculus VR

there is no reason to buy a second account, just get a cheap ship and jump into open. worse that can happen is you're blown up.

becoming wanted? i could envision a scenario where a player could trick a newbie into firing first and then become wanted, but that would be extremely rare and similarly innocuous: worst case explode, pay off peanuts bounty.

if you absolutely want a 2nd account go ahead, but this is going to be a lot of hassle for nothing.

Not so easy to do if you want to run two different styles. I have one out and out explorer and another for playing in open.
You will need to progress both accounts as you see fit but I picked up my alt account for £5 off steam a while back and apart from setting up a new launcher and shortcut that was the only hassle.

You need to have a separate shortcut for each logon
Sorry, I am still none the wiser. I always start ED by running the Oculus client (or whatever it is called) and then start ED by clicking the Play icon in the product:

Is there a better way? How do I set up launcher shortcuts that automatically start Oculus? This info is not easy to find.

IIRC (some time ago, before I ditched the Rift for a HP reverb), you don't need the Oculus launcher at all. For Steam, you might need to install SteamVR (probably not for Oculus HMDs, though). Then have Oculus running in the background, set ED (in the options) for HMD and start ED. ED will then tell Oculus (or SteamVR) that it wants to use the HMD, and that's it.

OK, I am starting to think that I am mentally deficient in some way.

How does one have "Oculus running in the background"?
Also, I see no option to select the HMD in ED settings (Graphics settings?)

If I run ED from its launcher (which is here: "W:\Oculus Apps\Software\frontier-developments-plc-elite-dangerous\EDLaunch.exe") then I get this:

If I OK this the launcher opens, runs Oculus and loads the game into desktop mode.

Am I missing a very obvious step here?

It might be because you bought ED through the Oculus store (the location is a hint) and are not using (can't use) the FD launcher.
Otherwise, yes, graphics options - 3D - HMD (Headphones)

Aha! So buying ED though the Oculus store gives you a custom build for Oculus? That might explain a lot then, thanks.
If I buy and download a fresh installation of ED direct from the Frontier store, as I will if/when I can buy my alt account (different problems at that end, see below), can I then run this "vanilla" installation in the Oculus headset? Presumably I need to run Oculus Home first, launch ED from its separate launcher and then I am able to select "HMD" in the options? Running two accounts then would just be a case of copying the launcher?

Thanks for all the help chaps. If Frontier can get me past their delightful "JSON error" when I try to buy an account then I might eventually see some of you in Open

I found this video btw, very useful - if useless for an Oculus special ED build

Apologies I didn't clock that you bought via Oculus.
If you buy your alt account from Frontier or Steam it will install onto your machine locally and setup a shortcut on the desktop. The shortcut will point at the vanilla launcher executable. Each subsequent account, once bought, you can copy the launcher to launcher2 etc and point a new shortcut to it. Once logged in the first time it will remember the account/launcher combination.

I'm pretty sure the actual game code is the same so no tweaking for Oculus.

It is not a special version, it just uses a few launcher commandline option to enforce starting in VR and automatically closing the the launcher, the launcher is used.
You still need a frontier account to login, and THAT frontier account login is what is used for your game details.
You can go to your ED install folder and find the launcher there and will work just fine, the oculus launch function is just that, like a desktop shortcut.

Looking at the error, I'd say that's something hokey they are doing, I would simply login to the frontier store and download the launcher from them direct, and install the game through there.
As for Oculus, I'd just uninstall it.
You would of course have to enable the "unknown sources" setting.
But who doesn't ?
As this is the setting needed to play any Steamvr game as well.

Surely the Oculus software needs to be installed in order to talk to the CV1 headset?

Hi,
So yes, Oculus needs starting and has to be running in order to use ED via the Rift CV1.
As long as Oculus is running, you can start ED outside of Oculus, for example, via EDProfiler, or even directly, although you will get that dialog warning you off this route.

Now, if you click on the ... next to ED in the library and Start in Desktop Mode, it will start the ED launcher but not start ED.
Don't have a 2nd account so this is a bit of guesswork
You should be able to log out the User (not machine) and log back in with the other account, then close the launcher, return to Oculus and start again in VR on the other account.
